At least 51 people have died due to the floods in Spain caused by torrential rains in the Valencia region, in the southeast of the country, as reported on Wednesday by rescue services.
“First report issued by the various security and emergency forces: provisional number of fatalities is 51 people,” indicated the rescue services in Valencia on the social network X.
“The process of lifting and identifying the victims is now underway,” they added.
Strong winds and torrential rains have battered the south and east of the country since the beginning of the week, triggering floods in Spain especially in Valencia and the Andalusia region. Some parts of the Valencian Community were still without telephone or electricity service on Wednesday morning, and certain areas remained inaccessible due to inundated roads, as reported by the regional president, Carlos Mazón. Footage recorded on Tuesday showed streams of water sweeping through streets and carrying away cars.
Rail and air transport to the area has been severely affected.
The Congress of Deputies observed a minute of silence on Wednesday in honor of the victims. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who was returning from a trip to India, will preside over a crisis committee at noon to monitor the situation, as announced by the Presidency.
