The mayor of Gualeguaychú, Mauricio Davico, signed an agreement with Aves Argentinas to advance in the conservation of the Yellow Cardinal (Xanthopsar flavus), an iconic bird of the Pampas grasslands and marshes, currently endangered.
The species faces numerous threats, such as habitat loss, illegal trafficking, and parasitism of breeding by the shiny cowbird.
Comprehensive Conservation Plan
Through this alliance, the aim is to implement a comprehensive conservation plan focused on the protection and restoration of the natural habitats of the species, population monitoring, and the development of an action plan supported by scientific research.
Signing of the Agreement
During the signing of the agreement, municipal authorities were present such as Juan Ignacio Olano, Secretary of Human Development; Ivana Zecca, Subsecretary of Environment, and Juan Solari, in charge of Protected Natural Areas.
Representing Aves Argentinas were Hernán Casañas, Executive Director; Rocío Lapido, Yellow Cardinal Project Coordinator; Federico Schafer, National Coordinator of the Argentine Grasslands Alliance, and Juan Pagani, Grasslands Alliance Auditor.
Objectives of the Agreement
The agreement not only foresees the protection of the Yellow Cardinal but also the creation of research strategies in the municipality’s protected areas, in order to strengthen biodiversity conservation actions. Aves Argentinas will provide technical and scientific support for the development of management plans and project implementation in these areas.
Commitment to Conservation and Environmental Education
This agreement reaffirms the municipality’s commitment to preserving natural resources and reinforces its leadership in environmental management. In addition to saving an endangered species, this agreement seeks to preserve local ecosystems and promote environmental education in the community.
With this alliance, Gualeguaychú takes a key step towards the sustainable future of the region, demonstrating that biodiversity conservation is a priority on the municipal agenda.
