The municipality of Puerto Rico in Misiones has implemented the **Municipal Horticultural Nursery**, an initiative that will produce around 35 thousand [seedlings of various vegetables](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/dos-decadas-de-crecimiento-san-pedro-se-consolida-como-la-tierra-de-viveros/).
This space, located on the border between the San Francisco and San Alberto neighborhoods, was developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Family Farming, and Bioinputs. The main objective is to **supply families** and producers in the region, [promoting food sovereignty](https://noticiasambientales.com/bienestar/crean-un-banco-de-semillas-solidario-para-hacer-frente-contra-el-cambio-climatico/) and strengthening production destined for sale.
## An innovative project for the community in Misiones
Mayor Carlos Koth highlighted the relevance of the project: “This is work driven by the municipal Agriculture and Environment department in conjunction with the CIC. For some time now, we have been promoting the **creation of vegetable gardens**, especially in the San Alberto neighborhood, where there are many producers. The idea is for each family to be able to generate their own **healthy and natural production**, which not only contributes to better nutrition but also to economic savings.”
Additionally, the mayor pointed out that the nursery will not only supply the residents but also open doors to **innovative initiatives**.
“We aim to produce a significant amount of seedlings. This will allow us to exchange with other municipalities, such as seedlings for used oil. We also seek to **promote the ‘Made in Puerto Rico’ brand**, approved by ordinance, to enhance production destined for supermarkets and small producers,” he stated.

## Joint contributions and benefits of the horticultural nursery
The project was completed in a short period of time thanks to joint contributions. The municipality was responsible for the construction of the wooden structure. **The Ministry of Agriculture provided seeds**, a water pump for the irrigation system, and other essential supplies that ensure the efficient operation of the nursery.
This new space represents a significant step towards food self-sufficiency and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. It not only strengthens the local economy but also improves the quality of life for families and producers in Puerto Rico.
## What is a horticultural nursery?
A seedbed or horticultural nursery allows you to **plant, germinate, mature, and harden all kinds of plants**. It has a prepared and conditioned land area to place the seeds and allow them to **germinate under the best conditions**, until the plant is ready for transplant.
