Colombia advances in the knowledge of its biodiversity thanks to an unprecedented monitoring network. Additionally, the results reflect the potential of technology applied to conservation.
Consequently, the National Network of Camera Traps OTUS managed to record more than 140,000 wildlife events. Therefore, it is consolidated as a key tool.
Likewise, 339 species were identified in different regions. Thus, the outlook on wildlife is expanded.
On the other hand, the advances were presented in Cartagena. Consequently, the coordinated work between institutions was highlighted.
Monitoring with technology throughout the Colombian territory
The network has 1,800 camera traps strategically distributed. Additionally, it covers nearly one million hectares.
Consequently, the devices capture images without altering animal behavior. Therefore, precise information is obtained. Likewise, the system operates in remote areas. Thus, access is gained to areas of difficult exploration.
On the other hand, the initiative is driven by the Regional Autonomous Corporations. Consequently, environmental management is strengthened.
Registered species and data analysis
Among the records, 89 species of mammals and 242 birds stand out. Additionally, emblematic animals of the ecosystem were identified.
Consequently, species such as the common opossum, the nine-banded armadillo, and the paca appear. Therefore, diversity is evidenced.
Likewise, the cameras also detected the presence of domestic animals. Thus, possible threats are identified.
On the other hand, the data allows for the study of behaviors and distribution. Consequently, decision-making is improved.
The case of Valle del Cauca and its contribution to the network
The Valle del Cauca positions itself as a key player. Additionally, it has 171 installed cameras. Consequently, more than 20,000 images were obtained. Therefore, 126 species were identified. Likewise, 45 mammals and 80 birds were recorded. Thus, the richness of the territory is reaffirmed.
On the other hand, the incorporation of artificial intelligence optimizes the analysis. Consequently, data processing is accelerated.
The biodiversity of Colombia, a treasure in constant discovery
Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. Additionally, it hosts an enormous variety of ecosystems.
Consequently, it possesses forests, mountains, and coasts that favor wildlife. Therefore, its biological wealth is unique.
Likewise, this diversity includes thousands of species of flora and fauna. Thus, many have not yet been studied.
On the other hand, conservation is essential in the face of threats such as deforestation. Consequently, initiatives like the OTUS Network are fundamental.
