Cats are among the most popular pets in the world; however, the preference for kittens creates a persistent inequality. Consequently, older felines are often left behind in adoption processes.
This situation becomes critical in the United Kingdom, where numerous shelters operate at the limit of their capacity. Therefore, the saturation forces in some cases to make drastic decisions due to lack of space.
Additionally, senior cats are the most affected by this trend. Despite their longevity, which can reach between 15 and 20 years, they are often perceived as animals with greater needs.
Shropshire Cat Rescue: a model of animal care and respect
In response to this scenario, the organization Shropshire Cat Rescue, located in Shrewsbury, promotes a focus centered on the welfare of older cats. Their work combines rescue, veterinary care, and finding homes.
The project was founded in 1991 by Marion Micklewright, motivated by the need to avoid the euthanasia of elderly felines. Later, the initiative evolved into an innovative model.
Thus, in 2009 the “Retirement Village” was inaugurated, a space specifically designed to offer a dignified life to cats that would hardly be adopted.

The “Retirement Village” features six chalets that house up to four cats each. Additionally, it includes the “Moggies Mansion”, a common area intended for rest and socialization.

On the other hand, the cats receive daily supervision from volunteers. In turn, periodic check-ups and veterinary care ensure the monitoring of their health status.
