On Tuesday, April 29, Animal Day is celebrated in Argentina. It seeks to pay tribute to pets, but also to promote awareness of animal welfare and the responsibility to ensure their care and respect.
It is worth mentioning that this date is commemorated in Argentina today, not in the rest of the world.
Animal Day: why it is celebrated today
There are two versions as to why it is commemorated every April 29, both related to Ignacio Lucas AlbarracÃn. The first indicates that it is a tribute to the date of his death in 1926.

The other version refers to him having chosen this date himself in 1908, and then it coincided with his death.
Who was Ignacio Lucas AlbarracÃn
Ignacio Lucas AlbarracÃn was born on July 31, 1850 in the city of Córdoba. Despite graduating as a lawyer in 1873, he dedicated his career to defending animal rights.
He was a pioneer in the fight for animal rights in our country and became president of the Animal Protection Society, through which he promoted various laws.
He was the secretary of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals since its foundation in 1879, and six years later, he succeeded Domingo Faustino Sarmiento as president.
AlbarracÃn was the driving force behind the National Law for the Protection of Animals No. 2786, which was enacted on July 25, 1891.
His work also served as the legal basis for the creation of the International League for Animal Rights in 1977 and also for the United Nations (UN).
Animals on the brink of extinction: which ones could disappear in the 21st century?
Endangered animals.
The 21st century has been established as an era of great technological and scientific achievements, but also as an era of environmental crises. One of the most pressing problems is the accelerated loss of biodiversity, with endangered animals.
Every year, dozens of species silently disappear from the planet, many of them without even being adequately studied by science.
This disappearance not only affects the ecosystems they inhabit but also directly impacts human life by altering food chains, ecosystem services, and the planet’s natural balance.
