In an effort to save the lives of hundreds of specimens, they will install bird rescue ramps in San Luis. This will be done as part of a campaign that seeks to protect animals that drown in Australian tanks.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration between the Center for the Conservation of Birds of Prey (CECARÁ), the Private Protected Natural Area “La Siempre Viva“, and the local Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development.

Bird rescue ramps: how they are and where they will be installed

Between February 20 and 27, CECARÁ, with the support of the environmental portfolio, will launch an innovative campaign in the northern province.

It will be done in the buffer zone of the ANPP “La Siempre Viva,” near the towns of Santa Rosa del Cantantal and Chipiscú. The idea is to turn the Australian tanks into safe spaces that prevent drowning of birds and other wildlife.

The ramps, which have proven their effectiveness in previous campaigns in other provinces, allow wildlife to exit the tanks without getting trapped.

Additionally, they help maintain water cleanliness. The first action, which will take place in areas near Quebracho de La Legua and the Sierra de las Quijadas National Park, will add to the efforts of the region’s producers for the care of native fauna.

“With this action, the aim is to generate a tangible change in the way water resources are managed in rural areas, without forgetting the safety and well-being of local wildlife. Through simple and very effective solutions,” they argued.

The issue with tanks

According to official data from INDEC, including the provinces of La Pampa, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Santa Fe as a core area of livestock production, there are 250,000 tanks.

In La Pampa alone, it was estimated that an average of 10 birds drown every year in each tank.

On the other hand, according to statistics, in the distribution area of northern San Luis, where the ramps will be installed, this problem affects endangered species.

This initiative is part of the annual operational plan of the Native Forest Law. It is supported by environmental programs such as the Green Climate Fund and the Rufford Foundation to transform reservoir infrastructure.
