Chaco confirms a second jaguar birth in El Impenetrable: an ecological rebirth for the species

The El Impenetrable National Park, in the province of Chaco, confirmed the birth of a second wild jaguar cub, marking a historic milestone in the recovery of the species in the region.

The first record was made in August 2024, when local guides Pablo and Darío observed the female Nalá with her cub on a riverbank of the Bermejo River.

This new sighting, confirmed by trap cameras from the Rewilding Argentina Foundation, demonstrates that conservation efforts are yielding concrete results after decades of functional extinction in the Argentine Chaco.

Two females, two cubs

  • The first cub, Nalá’s offspring, was recorded in 2024 and recently confirmed on video with its tail intact.
  • The second cub, seen months later, belongs to another female —probably Keraná— and has a distinctive feature: partial loss of its tail.

In this way, the existence of two distinct births is confirmed, reinforcing hope for the future of the species in the wild.

Ecological importance

The jaguar is a top predator, key to maintaining ecosystem balance. Its presence regulates populations of other species and ensures the health of native forests. The recovery of this feline in El Impenetrable means:

  • Restoring the ecological role of the Chaco’s main predator.
  • Reversing decades of absence that affected natural dynamics.
  • Strengthening biodiversity in a strategic area of 128,000 hectares.

Conservation milestones

  • In 2019, the wild male Qaramta, a symbol of the species’ resilience, was recorded.
  • Subsequently, females like Keraná and Nalá were released, thanks to the joint work of National Parks and the Rewilding Argentina Foundation.
  • In 2024, the historic birth of the first wild cub in 35 years was achieved.
  • In 2026, the confirmation of a second birth marks a new chapter in the recovery of the jaguar.

El Impenetrable as a refuge and symbol of resilience

The park functions as a biological corridor that allows monitoring, reintroduction, and connection with other regions. Additionally, work is being done on:

  • Control of poaching.
  • Habitat restoration.
  • Environmental education and community participation.

The survival of the jaguar is considered an “ecological rebirth”. Its recovery is vital not only for the species but also for the survival of the Chaco ecosystem, which depends on the presence of large predators to maintain its balance.

The birth of a second cub in El Impenetrable confirms that the conservation strategy is working. This achievement reinforces the importance of protecting the Chaco forest and demonstrates that, with commitment and joint work, it is possible to reverse extinction processes and bring hope back to an emblematic species of the region.
