Colombia approved a law for teaching about animal and nature care in schools

The Congress of Colombia gave the green light to the “Empathy Law,” an initiative that marks a milestone in environmental education and animal welfare. The measure incorporates respect and care for animals and nature at all levels of the educational system, from preschool to secondary education.

With this step, the country is betting on a profound cultural change, aiming to educate generations more aware of the human impact on nature and animals. Empathy thus becomes a transversal value within school learning.

The project, identified as Law 010 of 2024, integrates into existing programs and does not create a new subject, but rather transforms the way of teaching and understanding the relationship with the environment.

Education with a focus on respect and care

The Empathy Law stipulates that content on animal welfare be incorporated transversally into the School Environmental Projects (Praes), the Citizen Environmental Education Projects (Procedas), and the Inter-institutional Environmental Education Committees (Cideas).

This integration will allow topics of animal protection, responsible ownership, and biodiversity conservation to be present in everyday school subjects and activities.

The Ministry of Education will have six months to define the curricular guidelines, which will include ethical treatment towards animals, prevention of mistreatment, and the promotion of a harmonious coexistence between people and other species.

Training with social and environmental impact

In addition to the pedagogical approach, the new law establishes that secondary education students can fulfill their social service in centers dedicated to animal welfare. This experience seeks to unite theory with practice, fostering youth participation in the protection of ecosystems and wildlife.

The regulation also promotes the creation of a national network of teachers for animal protection and welfare, aiming to share resources, methodologies, and pedagogical strategies nationwide.

With this network, Colombia seeks to strengthen cooperation between educational institutions and environmental organizations, promoting continuous and collaborative learning around sustainability.

Benefits of empathetic education

The inclusion of animal welfare in formal education can generate lasting benefits both socially and environmentally. By promoting empathy from an early age, values such as responsibility, solidarity, and respect for life are strengthened.

A more empathetic citizenry tends to adopt sustainable behaviors, reduce violence towards animals, and care for natural resources with greater awareness. These changes impact the health of ecosystems and collective quality of life.

In the long term, the Empathy Law could contribute to reducing abandonment and animal abuse, promoting conservation policies, and consolidating communities more balanced with their environment.

Towards a new environmental culture

With the approval of this law, Colombia positions itself at the regional forefront in terms of environmental education and animal ethics. The country recognizes that structural changes in the relationship with nature begin in the classrooms.

The challenge will be to ensure the correct implementation of the content, teacher training, and active participation of the entire educational community.

The “Empathy Law” represents a commitment to a society more just with all forms of life, where education not only transmits knowledge but also compassion and environmental responsibility.
