Historical relocation: Rwanda successfully relocates 70 white rhinos in the largest operation of its kind

Rwanda announced this week the successful relocation of 70 white rhinos, transported from South Africa on a journey of over 4,000 kilometers.

This operation, considered the largest to date, aims to strengthen the rhinoceros population in Africa, a species that has suffered drastic reductions due to poaching and historical exploitation.

## Destination and Monitoring of the Rhinos
The specimens were moved from the Rhino Rewild center in South Africa to Akagera National Park in Rwanda, as confirmed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

The journey lasted three days, and now a team of specialized veterinarians monitors their health and adaptation, ensuring that the relocation does not have negative impacts on the animals.

## Impact of the Rhino Rewild Initiative
This effort is part of the Rhino Rewild program by African Parks, supported by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, which aims to:
– Increase the white rhino population in a new breeding stronghold in Rwanda.
– Reduce vulnerability to poaching, a growing problem in the region.

## Threats and Current Status of the Species
According to the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), rhino poaching in Africa increased by 4% between 2022 and 2023, with 586 individuals poached in 2023.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN):
– The southern white rhino is classified as “near threatened,” with approximately 17,000 individuals.
– The northern white rhino is practically extinct, with only two surviving females.

## A Crucial Advance in Rhino Protection
The relocation of these 70 specimens represents a milestone in animal conservation, ensuring a new opportunity for the species in Rwanda. It reinforces efforts to protect them from poaching and habitat loss.

This operation highlights the importance of coordinated actions to ensure the survival of endangered species, setting a precedent in the conservation of African wildlife.
