In the province of Mendoza, nearly 60 birds were rescued from illegal possession in joint operations. Consequently, the action involved the Ministry of Energy and Environment, the Ministry of Security and Justice, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The procedures were carried out in homes in Maipú and Las Heras. There, authorities detected specimens in overcrowded conditions and inadequate care.
Additionally, the rescue was made possible thanks to citizen reports made to the emergency system. Therefore, the key role of the community in the protection of wildlife was highlighted.
Affected species and captivity conditions
Among the recovered birds, mockingbirds, mistos, seven knives, cimarrones, corbatitas, chiriguas, goldfinches, and testes boquenses were identified. In all cases, they were protected species.
In this regard, the animals were kept in cages and traps. These conditions limited their natural behavior and affected their health.
On the other hand, invasive exotic species were also detected. This adds an additional risk to the local ecosystems.
Furthermore, those involved claimed to be unaware of the prohibition. However, they agreed to voluntarily hand over the specimens.

Recovery and reintegration into their habitat
The birds were transferred to the Ecoparque de Mendoza for evaluation. There, a veterinary team analyzes their health status.
Subsequently, they will undergo a rehabilitation process. This will allow determining if they can return to their natural environment.
Additionally, the specimens will be transferred to the Ecological Reserve of the Luján de Cuyo Refinery. This space facilitates their adaptation before release.
Thus, the ultimate goal is to return the birds to their ecosystems. The recovery involves both physical and behavioral care.
Environmental and social consequences
The illegal possession of wildlife generates significant impacts. Firstly, it reduces natural populations and alters the ecological balance.
Additionally, it affects key functions such as seed dispersal. This impacts the regeneration of ecosystems.
On the other hand, captivity causes stress and diseases in the animals. Consequently, it decreases their chances of survival.
Moreover, there is a social impact. Wildlife trafficking is linked to illegal practices that weaken environmental protection.

The punishment for illegal possession of species
In Argentina, the capture and possession of wildlife is prohibited by national and provincial regulations. Therefore, those who break the law face sanctions.
These may include financial fines, confiscation of the animals, and judicial actions. In more severe cases, greater penalties are considered.
Additionally, the elements used, such as cages and traps, are also seized. This aims to prevent the continuation of illegal activity.
Consequently, authorities reinforce controls and awareness campaigns. Compliance with the regulations is key to protecting biodiversity.
Citizen participation and conservation
The rescue of these birds highlights the importance of citizen reporting. Indeed, the collaboration allowed detecting situations of mistreatment.
Additionally, it promotes a culture of respect for wildlife. Environmental education is fundamental to preventing these cases.
On the other hand, the coordination between organizations strengthens public policies. Thus, a more effective response to environmental crimes is achieved.
Finally, the conservation of biodiversity requires collective commitment. Each action contributes to preserving the natural balance.
