Poaching in San Rafael: warning about the environmental impact on the piche and the illegal use of dogs in Mendoza

The environmental control once again took center stage in the department of San Rafael, where an operation detected illegal practices directly affecting biodiversity. In particular, the poaching of the piche raised new alarms in provincial organizations.

Additionally, the intervention revealed other irregularities such as unauthorized nighttime navigation and the use of dogs for hunting. Therefore, authorities reinforced controls in rural areas considered sensitive for wildlife.

Consequently, the procedure became an example of the constant pressure faced by arid ecosystems. At the same time, it highlights the need to strengthen surveillance and environmental awareness.

Operations on Old Route 40, Tranquera de Hierro, and Las Aucas under environmental scrutiny

The deployment took place on Old Route 40, in the Tranquera de Hierro sector, and extended to Las Aucas. There, three vehicle checkpoints were set up to inspect cars and occupants.

During the controls, a specimen of piche (Zaedyus pichiy), a protected species in Mendoza, was detected. Additionally, the vehicle contained items associated with hunting, such as a knife and hunting dogs.

In parallel, tasks continued in Agua del Toro, where records were made for nighttime navigation. Subsequently, a fixed post allowed for expanded inspections and detection of more vehicles with dogs used for hunting activities.

Hunting dogs and illegal practices: a growing threat to ecosystems

The use of dogs in poaching is one of the main environmental concerns. Indeed, this practice is prohibited due to its impact on the native fauna.

On one hand, dogs can chase and kill protected animals. On the other, when they are loose or become feral, they form packs that disrupt the ecological balance.

Additionally, there is a sanitary risk associated, as many of these animals lack veterinary controls. Consequently, they can transmit diseases to both wildlife and livestock.

The piche: a key species for arid ecosystems and its conservation status

The piche (Zaedyus pichiy) is a characteristic armadillo of the arid regions of Argentina. Its presence is essential for the functioning of these fragile environments.

On one hand, its burrowing behavior promotes soil aeration. Additionally, it contributes to water infiltration, a scarce resource in these areas.

However, the species faces growing threats such as illegal hunting and habitat loss. Therefore, in Mendoza, it was declared a natural monument, implying its maximum legal protection.

Control, reporting, and awareness: keys to stopping poaching

The operation concluded with seven vehicles inspected and at least one confirmed infraction. However, authorities warn that these cases occur frequently.

In this regard, citizen participation is crucial. Reporting to official channels allows for faster action against environmental crimes.

Finally, specialists agree that protecting species like the piche not only involves conserving an animal but also maintaining the balance of entire ecosystems.
