The **[horse was sacrificed](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/aparecieron-caballos-muertos-en-el-hipodromo-de-la-plata/)** after breaking its front legs and the jockey was fired. Immediately, the animal tried to stand up and couldn’t, and moments of anguish were experienced at the **Rosario Racetrack**.

The incident **happened during a race**, very close to the stands where the public was located. In the third race, almost reaching the finish line, the horse fell, throwing the rider to the ground, who was unharmed. However, **the animal [suffered serious injuries](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/ushuaia-aprobo-una-ley-que-reconoce-a-los-caballos-como-seres-sintientes/)** that prevented it from standing.

A video that went viral on social media shows how the horse was sacrificed after breaking its legs and was unable to get up during the race. Then, **it was laid down and covered with a screen, and a veterinarian euthanized it with an injection**.

## The controversy with Racetracks: Does the horse have to be sacrificed or can it recover?

“When a **large animal** has an exposed fracture, there is no other solution, it has to be sacrificed,” explained Oscar Barattucci, trainer and son of jockey Ángel Barattucci, in an interview with La Capital. “It’s a very large animal. Even transporting it to an operating room is difficult. And then you have to **hang it up for rest**. There’s no remedy, it has to be **sacrificed**. They **put it to sleep**, it’s euthanasia, and it **rests in peace**,” explained the trainer.

“As **it couldn’t stand up**, we covered it with a screen, **put it to sleep**, and finally it was taken away with a special cart there. It was no more than five or six minutes,” Barattucci recounted.

The trainer explained that when “the bone breaks the skin and sticks out,” that wound cannot be healed. “The horse can’t hang in rest for five or six months. If you put a cast on it, it can get **gangrene** or an infection. It will die anyway, but **suffering**,” he argued.

Barattucci added that, per year, “one or at most two” open fractures can occur in the **races organized by the Rosario Racetrack**, and the reasons are linked to the discipline itself: during competition, the animal can step incorrectly and **suffer serious injuries**.

The Rosario trainer clarified that if the horse suffers a **simple fracture**, it is not **sacrificed**: the wound is cast and recovery is awaited.

Once again, controversy arises in public opinion, the demand and use of the animal that ends up paying the consequences, while **turf** fans do business making money with the lives of horses.
