Central Puerto, the main electricity generation company in Argentina, and AXION energy have signed a strategic agreement for the supply of energy from renewable sources to the Axion refinery located in the city of Campana, province of Buenos Aires.
The contract also includes the issuance of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), which certify the renewable origin of the energy at an international level.
With a duration of five years, this contract establishes that 25% of the energy consumed by the AXION energy refinery will be of renewable origin. This volume is equivalent to a total supply of approximately 60 GWh annually, coming from wind and solar plants owned by Central Puerto, located in the southern provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Salta.
Thanks to this initiative, AXION energy will reduce its carbon footprint, avoiding the emission of approximately 124,700 tons of CO₂ during the contract period.
The agreement between both companies represents a key action for a more sustainable operation and, at the same time, reaffirms AXION energy‘s commitment to seeking efficient and sustainable operations.
This alliance contributes to generating social, economic, and environmental value, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Global Compact Principles.
Melisa Prost, Executive Manager of the Technical Division of AXION energy, stated: “We are convinced that energy competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability must go hand in hand. This contract is proof that it is possible to ensure efficiency in our operations, guarantee reliable supply for our refinery, and at the same time, move towards an increasingly clean energy matrix.”
Prost added that “thanks to the I-REC certificates included in the agreement, the renewable origin of the energy consumed in our Campana refinery is validated with international standards, where we have made the largest investment in the last 35 years in Argentina’s refining sector.”
Meanwhile, Gabriel Ures, Commercial Director of Central Puerto, noted: “It is extremely important for Central Puerto to have reached this strategic agreement with AXION energy, which is a model to follow in terms of sustainability policies at the national level. We are convinced that this is a great opportunity to start generating synergies between both companies.”
Finally, Franco Perseguino, Energy and Services Commercialization Manager of Central Puerto, highlighted: “Central Puerto and AXION energy have shown that it is possible to move towards a competitive energy transition.
This first supply agreement marks a milestone in a transforming electric market context, where the contractualization of Energy and Power will be key to ensuring supply reliability, and this is what we have been strongly collaborating on with our clients.
Thanks to the diversity of generation technologies we have —thermal, hydroelectric, and renewables— we are solidly positioned to provide the best energy solutions to our clients.”
