Engines of the future: the rise of electric cars increases the demand for specialized mechanics in Spain

The accelerated growth of electric vehicles is marking a turning point in the automotive industry. In September, electric and plug-in hybrid cars accounted for nearly 24% of total sales, a figure that redefines the market structure and the demands for specialized mechanics.

Faced with this scenario, mechanical workshops are forced to transform. Traditional repairs give way to tasks related to electrical systems, lithium batteries, and automotive software. The new mobility demands technicians trained in sustainability, safety, and energy efficiency.

In response, the Vocational Training system (FP) in Spain has incorporated specific qualifications for electric and hybrid vehicles. Over 6,000 students enrolled last year, driven by high labor demand and the need for new technical skills.

Companies like Tesla, Renault, and Volkswagen collaborate in these programs, aware that the future of transportation depends on a workforce prepared to keep the electric revolution going.

Green training for cleaner mobility

The Spanish Ministry of Education has created two official courses focused on the maintenance and safety of electric vehicles. These trainings, available in ten communities and autonomous cities, combine theory, practice, and constant technological updates.

Specialization not only responds to the energy transition, but also to an ecological opportunity. Each trained technician contributes to reducing indirect emissions, optimizing resources, and extending the lifespan of electric vehicles, whose preventive maintenance is much more efficient and cleaner than that of combustion engines.

Employability in this sector exceeds 70%, consolidating specialized mechanics as key figures in the new green economy. However, challenges still persist: the lack of investment in small workshops and the need to extend training throughout the country.

Benefits of promoting sustainable workshops and specialized mechanics

Training in electric mobility not only boosts employment but also generates positive environmental impacts. By replacing polluting engines with electric systems, specialized workshops help reduce the carbon footprint of transportation, one of the sectors that most contribute to global warming.

Furthermore, the modernization of workshops promotes the circular economy through responsible management of batteries, parts, and recyclable materials. This avoids hazardous waste and encourages the reuse of high-value components.

Local communities are also strengthened. Workshops adapted to the new mobility offer skilled employment, drive technological innovation, and attract investments to regions seeking to reconvert their productive matrix without depending on fossil fuels.

Although the majority of the automotive fleet still relies on the combustion engine, the advancement of electric vehicles is unstoppable. Adapting is no longer an option, but a strategic necessity to ensure competitiveness and sustainability.

Sector associations, such as Ganvam and Aedive, have launched academies and safety guides to facilitate the transition. With institutional support and corporate commitment, the future of workshops will be greener, more digital, and more resilient.

The mechanic workshop of tomorrow will not only repair cars: it will be a key player in the transition to cleaner mobility and a more sustainable planet.
