The multinational group Stellantis will make a milestone in the local industry by being the first automaker to manufacture electric cars in Argentina, and hybrid models.
It has confirmed that it will start production of the Peugeot 208 and 2008 Bio-Hybrids models. With this step, the company becomes the first terminal in the country to manufacture electrified vehicles, destined for the Brazilian market.
The Bio-Hybrid technology is an innovation developed by the Development Center of Stellantis in South America.
The electric vehicles market is growing: how does Bio-Hybrid technology work
This system is part of a global strategy for more sustainable mobility, taking advantage of the use of ethanol as a renewable fuel.
It integrates propulsion with biofuels and light hybrid technology (mild hybrid). A new multifunctional electric device replaces the alternator and starter motor, providing additional energy to the thermal engine and charging a 12V lithium-ion battery.

The system is capable of generating up to 3KW of energy, optimizing the vehicle’s performance and significantly reducing fuel consumption.
Furthermore, by using ethanol, the production cycle of this biofuel compensates a large part of the CO2 generated, contributing to decarbonizing mobility.
Martín Zuppi, president of Stellantis in Argentina, highlighted that this launch not only represents an advancement for the local automotive industry but also drives electrification in the region. “The launch in Brazil of the first hybrid vehicle designed and produced by Stellantis in Argentina represents a new milestone for our country’s automotive industry and for our company’s engineering,” he stated.
The Peugeot 208, which in 2020 was the first model to use the multi-energy platform CMP (Common Modular Platform) at the El Palomar plant, leads this new technological chapter.
The Chinese automaker that landed and could manufacture vehicles in the country
Hand in hand with the giant Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams), the electric vehicles market in Argentina promises to expand further.
The world leader in electric mobility, and main competitor of Tesla, took a key step in its regional strategy by officially forming its subsidiary BYD Auto Argentina S.A.U.
The establishment of the company marks the beginning of a new stage. Besides, as they revealed, it could involve investments in infrastructure, distribution, and electric vehicle services in the country.
They have already appointed executive Yuan Deng as president and sole managing director of the subsidiary in Argentina.

The corporate purpose of BYD Auto Argentina S.A.U. covers the manufacture, import, marketing, and maintenance of electric cars, auto parts, batteries, and luminaires. In other words, it consolidates a broad framework for future operations.
In a first phase, BYD will work with local distributors, although the formation of the subsidiary opens the door to direct investment projects in Argentine territory.
