A erupting volcano keeps this Icelandic town on high alert

A volcano in Iceland entered into eruption in the last hours and has a town on edge. This volcano is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in the southwest of the country.

This is the seventh time it has become active in almost a year, since December of last year. According to authorities, it does not pose a threat to the nearby town of Grindavík.

Volcano erupting in Iceland: what is predicted

Lava began to flow from a fissure on Wednesday night in the Reykjanes Peninsula, in southwest Iceland.

The local meteorological office, which monitors seismic activity, indicated that the eruption occurred at 23:14 and created a fissure approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) long. However, it estimated that the phenomenon was considerably smaller than the previous one, recorded in August.

Although the eruption does not pose a threat to aviation, authorities warned of the presence of gases in parts of the peninsula, including the nearby town of Grindavík.

This town of 3,800 inhabitants, located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, has been the victim of successive volcanic eruptions. This has damaged infrastructure and properties, forcing many residents to relocate to ensure their safety.

Authorities, on this occasion, stated that the new eruption did not pose a threat to the town.
