In the framework of Earth Day, the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of San Juan announced a discovery that could become a milestone for environmental conservation in the region: the confirmation of a new native Chacay forest (Chuquiraga erinacea) in the heart of the San Juan mountain range.

The forest is located within the Manantiales Protected Area, in the Calingasta department, and was found after an expedition of over five hours on foot through high mountain terrain, starting from the National Gendarmerie post in Santana. The mission, led by specialized technical personnel in conservation and hiking, was made possible thanks to previous work on satellite analysis and accumulated territorial knowledge.

“The forest is in excellent vegetative condition, with a high density of specimens and, most importantly, without invasive exotic species such as rosehip,” detailed Gustavo Mercado, Director of Native Forests of the province.

## A biodiversity refuge at high altitude

In addition to its botanical value, the team recorded a notable presence of wildlife such as guanacos, pumas, mountain birds, and a rare Andean frog, highlighting the key ecological role of the ecosystem. “The forest not only survives in extreme altitude conditions, but also serves as a wildlife refuge. It is home, food, and balance for biodiversity,” added Mercado.

Although the area is already protected for being within a natural protected area, the Environment Secretariat is now seeking to formalize its inclusion in the Native Forests Land Use Planning under the category of “high conservation value,” following the guidelines of National Law 26.331. This classification would allow access to specific resources and tools to ensure its long-term preservation. The only permitted activities would be scientific or low-impact tourism.

“Celebrating Earth Day by discovering a hidden native forest among the mountains is a beautiful way to remind ourselves that there is still much to care for and much to discover,” concluded Mercado.

## A special week marked by Earth Day

The main objective of Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, is to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and the need to take action to address the environmental challenges facing the planet. It aims to promote harmony with nature, biodiversity conservation, and the adoption of sustainable practices.

In this way, it seeks to draw attention to environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss and inspire individuals, organizations, and governments to take action to protect the environment.

Additionally, it aims to promote the transition to sustainable development that balances economic, social, and environmental needs, promote the protection and restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and inform and educate the population about the importance of caring for the planet and practices that can contribute to its preservation.
