After a landmark judicial ruling, Entre Ríos regains over 5,200 hectares in the Lechiguanas Islands.

The Government of Entre Ríos achieved an unprecedented judicial victory by recovering 5,245 hectares of state lands located in the Lechiguanas Islands. These lands had been irregularly transferred between 1979 and 1997, as part of maneuvers initiated during the last military dictatorship.

The court declares private allocations in the Lechiguanas Islands null and void

The Court of Administrative Litigation No. 1 of Paraná accepted the action of damage filed by the State Prosecutor, Julio Rodríguez Signes. It declared the nullity of decrees and contracts that endorsed the sales to the company Paraná Guazú SA and to third-party buyers.

The ruling, issued on July 29, establishes that the islands are assets of the state public domain. Therefore, they are inalienable and imprescriptible, and only a national law can authorize their disaffection to allow their sale, which never happened in this case.

Policy of heritage recovery and environmental defense

This decision is part of the territorial regularization strategy promoted by the administration of Rogelio Frigerio. It is in compliance with the principles established in the provincial Constitution amended in 2008.

“The islands are assets of all residents of Entre Ríos and should never have been irregularly appropriated,” said Rodríguez Signes.

The official announced that they will continue with the survey and land title clean-up of other state lands improperly transferred or exploited, with the aim of:

  • Ensuring legality and territorial order
  • Strengthening environmental sovereignty over the provincial territory
  • Protecting the public heritage of Entre Ríos

A key precedent for the management of natural assets

The ruling sets a relevant judicial precedent in the defense of natural resources and strategic territories, especially in areas like the Delta Islands. There, pressure on the land and property has generated historical conflicts.

This progress reaffirms the provincial government’s commitment to transparent and sustainable land management. It opens the door to new legal actions to recover public assets that have been ceded without legal support.
