An atmospheric block explains the extreme heat days affecting much of the country. This pattern maintains record temperatures and exposes millions of people to unusual values.
The system acts as a true wall that prevents the entry of cool air. In this way, the heat is trapped over the center, northwest, and part of the south of the territory. For this reason, the episode lasts longer than usual.
How does the so-called “atmospheric wall” work?
The block forms when an anticyclone remains almost stationary for several days. That high pressure stops the normal circulation of the atmosphere.
As a result, a persistent north wind is established that transports warm air from tropical areas. At the same time, the advance of cold fronts from Patagonia is blocked. Thus, the heat finds no relief mechanism and accumulates day after day.

The role of descending air in thermal increase
This process is joined by subsidence, a descent of air from upper layers. When compressed, that air heats up even more.
As a result, cloud formation is hindered and solar radiation reaches directly for many hours. This intensifies the warming of the surface. Additionally, the stable atmosphere reinforces the persistence of the episode.
Most affected regions and changes in thermal sensation
Maximums exceed 35 °C in Cuyo, Catamarca, La Rioja, La Pampa, the north of Córdoba, the Litoral, and areas of Chaco. However, not all the heat feels the same.
In the first stage, dry heat predominates, with low humidity. Then, as the system moves, humidity increases and the thermal sensation becomes more overwhelming. This change favors the appearance of tropical nights, with minimums above 24 °C.
Current alerts and health risks
The National Meteorological Service maintains yellow and orange alerts in provinces like Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, Chaco, and San Luis.
These warnings reach both risk groups and the general population. Prolonged exposure can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and more serious complications. Therefore, prevention is key during these extreme events.

How to protect yourself from extreme heat?
In the face of high temperatures, it is recommended to stay constantly hydrated, even without feeling thirsty. It is also important to avoid intense physical activities during the central hours of the day.
Additionally, it is advised to wear light and clear clothing, ventilate spaces at night, and stay in cool places whenever possible. Special attention is required for babies, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses.
When could relief arrive?
The forecasts indicate that the block will begin to weaken between Tuesday and Wednesday. In the east of the country, the change of wind will allow for more cloudiness.
The entry of a weak cold front will bring isolated storms and a moderate drop in temperatures. However, a sudden change is not expected. Thus, relief will be gradual, in a summer increasingly marked by climate extremes.
