The municipality of Cafayate took a decisive step to safeguard the ecosystems affected by the recent forest fires. Through a new resolution, the administration led by Mayor Rita Guevara prohibited the approval of subdivisions, urbanizations, and changes in land use within the areas damaged by the fire.
The initiative aims to preserve the natural heritage while judicial investigations into the origin of the fires that affected large areas of native forest progress. In this way, the lands reached by the flames must be primarily allocated to their ecological recovery.
Likewise, the decision strengthens environmental conservation policies and seeks to prevent the degradation of these spaces from leading to economic benefits through future real estate developments.

Restrictions to protect the affected areas
The Municipal Resolution No. 179/26, signed on June 24, establishes that no municipal department may authorize subdivisions, lotting, urbanizations, permits, or changes in land use in the areas affected by the fires.
Furthermore, the provision extends to areas related to urban planning, environment, cadastre, public works, and permits, which must respect the restrictions provided by current legislation.
At the same time, the municipality created a Municipal Registry of Areas Affected by Forest Fires with the aim of identifying, documenting, and protecting each damaged area, while requesting provincial and national agencies to technically and georeferencedly delimit the compromised sectors.
Environmental restoration as a priority
One of the main foundations of the resolution is to prevent an eventual environmental crime from becoming an opportunity for real estate development on degraded lands.
In this sense, the measure accompanies the spirit of the national legislation that prioritizes the recovery of ecosystems after a forest fire, preserving the vegetation cover and favoring the natural regeneration of the forest.
On the other hand, the regulation reaffirms that native forests represent a strategic resource due to their ecological, landscape, cultural, tourist, and economic value for Cafayate, in addition to constituting an indispensable heritage for future generations.

The judicial investigation continues while preventive measures are reinforced
The municipal decision was adopted in parallel with the judicial investigation aimed at determining whether the fires were intentionally caused.
In this context, the prohibition of modifying land use sends an institutional signal aimed at ensuring that the affected areas remain protected throughout the evaluation and restoration process.
In this way, the municipality seeks to ensure that the recovery of natural environments prevails over any economic interest, also strengthening preventive actions against future forest fires.
Benefits of preventing urbanizations in burned areas
The restriction on changes in land use offers multiple environmental benefits. Firstly, it favors the natural regeneration of the native forest, allowing plant and animal species to gradually recover their habitats without new human alterations.
Additionally, conserving these spaces helps to reduce soil erosion, improves rainwater infiltration, and contributes to maintaining the ecosystem services provided by forests, such as carbon capture, climate regulation, and the protection of biodiversity.
Finally, this type of measure discourages possible fires with speculative purposes, promotes more sustainable territorial management, and strengthens environmental planning in the long term, ensuring that damaged ecosystems can be restored and continue to provide ecological, social, and economic benefits to the entire region.
