Controversy over tax benefits for hunting reserves for a period of up to 20 years in the province of Entre Ríos

The recent inclusion of fishing and sports hunting services in the Regime of Incentives for New Investments has raised strong environmental concerns. The regulation allows these activities to access tax exemptions and energy benefits for a period of 15 years, extendable up to 20.

According to the provisions, ventures in this sector may receive refunds, be exempt from withholding regimes, and not pay taxes such as Gross Income, Vehicle, and Real Estate taxes. With these facilities, the sports hunting sector is equated with other investments considered strategic for provincial development.

However, the measure raises concerns among environmental organizations that see this decision as a direct incentive to the expansion of hunting reserves. These spaces, which have already been criticized for the impact they have on native species and ecosystems, now have a legal framework that reinforces their presence.

The controversy lies in the fact that, as demands for greater wildlife protection increase, the provincial management chooses to promote activities that put it at risk. In fact, there are recent precedents of authorizations for hunting of native birds that have sparked criticism and legal actions.

A controversial decision

Granting tax benefits to these activities creates a contradictory scenario. While there is a growing urgency to restore degraded ecosystems and protect endangered wildlife, resources and exemptions are being allocated to practices that exacerbate the problem.

Experts argue that there are more sustainable alternatives to promote tourism and local investment. Eco-tourism, bird watching, and hiking are low-impact activities that can generate income, employment, and at the same time strengthen ecological awareness.

In a context of climate crisis and accelerated loss of biodiversity, the provincial decision represents a setback in terms of environmental policy. Promoting hunting with tax benefits not only impacts wildlife but also sends a message contrary to global commitments to conservation and sustainability.

The disadvantages of hunting reserves

Hunting reserves are often presented as recreational spaces and income generators for tourism, but from an ecological perspective, they show serious disadvantages. One of the most relevant is the direct pressure on wild species, many of which are essential for the balance of ecosystems. The elimination of birds and mammals alters food chains and affects the natural regeneration of environments.

Another critical aspect is the introduction of exotic species for hunting purposes. Many reserves resort to breeding or releasing non-native animals that end up competing with local fauna, transmitting diseases, or generating difficult-to-control plagues. This increases the loss of biodiversity and threatens the resilience of ecosystems.

In addition, there is a social and ethical impact. Sports hunting raises questions about the value given to wildlife, reduced to a recreational resource. This logic contrasts with global efforts to promote responsible nature tourism, which seeks to enjoy biodiversity without harming it.

Furthermore, reserves often restrict access to natural territories, turning them into private spaces where flora and fauna are subject to commercial use. This reduces the possibilities for community conservation and discourages projects for sustainable management that could benefit a broader audience.
