The environmental renewal of Pico de la Aguilica in Águilas is transforming one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Mediterranean coast in the Region of Murcia. This initiative, led by the Águilas Town Hall, seeks to ecologically restore the bay of Las Delicias, eliminating invasive plants, rehabilitating deteriorated areas, and enhancing biodiversity with native vegetation adapted to the climate.
Funded through the European Next Generation funds, this project is a step towards a sustainable urban model that combines landscape, tourism, and environmental protection. The intervention not only improves the natural environment but also adds value to the tourist appeal of the Murcian municipality.
The environmental restoration plan of the area includes various actions, such as ecological recovery, erosion control, and improvement of the public space in the iconic point of Águilas.
Thanks to the boost from the Next Generation funds, Águilas has initiated a significant transformation of its coastline. The project emphasizes the use of resistant local flora to revitalize the coast with advanced bioengineering techniques that use biodegradable materials to prevent soil erosion.
The elimination of invasive exotic species, such as carpobrotus edulis or ice plant, is key to restoring native biodiversity and allowing better-adapted species to thrive, reducing the negative environmental impact on the coast of Águilas.

The project also introduces the planting of species resistant to the climatic conditions of the Murcian coast, such as drought and wind, creating habitats for birds and pollinating insects essential for the balance of the Mediterranean ecosystem.
The inclusion of native vegetation not only reduces the maintenance of the green space but also promotes a more efficient and sustainable urban landscaping model for coastal tourist areas.
Among the innovative techniques, the use of biodegradable geomats made of coconut fiber stands out, helping to stabilize slopes and minimize erosion caused by rainfall and wind.
These natural solutions promote the rooting of new vegetation and improve soil quality without generating polluting waste, aligning with European environmental restoration practices.
Besides its ecological impact, the project in the bay of Las Delicias improves infrastructure for visitors, with new benches, bins, and optimized irrigation systems. This makes Pico de la Aguilica a more accessible and attractive place for residents and tourists.
The recovery of Pico de la Aguilica not only reinforces Águilas‘ commitment to sustainable tourism but also positions the municipality as a leader in landscape conservation and urban environmental quality.
Co-financed by the European Union within the “Blue Tourism of the Region of Murcia Destination 2023” program, this action reflects a comprehensive strategy for sustainability and tourism modernization on the Spanish coast.
The restoration of Pico de la Aguilica symbolizes a new approach to environmental recovery in the Mediterranean, where landscape protection and urban sustainability are essential for tourism and ecological development.
With this project, Águilas reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity and climate adaptation, enhancing one of the most iconic natural spaces in the Region of Murcia.
