Mexico committed to zero emissions and invites other countries

Mexico has announced its goal of achieving a net-zero economy by 2050, marking a significant step in its fight against climate change under the new presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum.

International Commitments

The announcement was made alongside promises from the European Union, Canada, and other countries at the UN COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan.

These commitments aim to establish climate goals for 2035, with significant reductions in pollution to achieve a net-zero economy by mid-century.

Challenges and the Need for Zero Emissions

José Luis Samaniego, director of Mexico’s National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, warned of a “catastrophic future” if drastic measures are not taken.

Mexico’s new goal was hailed as a crucial advancement, highlighting the importance of balancing greenhouse gas emissions with absorptions by 2050.

Roadmap for Other Countries

Mexico’s commitment aims to serve as a roadmap for other major emitters, including China, which has set a target to achieve net-zero before 2060.

The coalition including Chile, Norway, and Switzerland, among others, seeks to establish a model to follow and a benchmark for future climate pledges.

Importance of Progressive Reductions

The commitment establishes the need for progressive and rapid reductions of all greenhouse gases to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

Manish Bapna, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, emphasized that any deviation from a linear reduction in emissions would raise doubts about countries’ commitment to their net-zero emission goals.
