The world is still in shock over the death of Pope Francis. He has definitely become one of the most influential figures of the 21st century.
In addition to leaving teachings in many aspects and showing hard work in favor of peace and the fight against climate change, he also left a strong message for animal rights.
Pope Francis and his message about animals
“Spiritual leader and global reference in social justice, environmental, and ethical issues, his legacy includes a deeply human and respectful approach to all living beings, including animals,” stated the animal protection association Veg Foundation.
“Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology, Pope Francis promoted a comprehensive view of life,” they emphasized. “Which encompasses caring for nature and respecting all creatures,” they added.
The Pope stated on several occasions that animals should not be seen as objects, but as living beings with dignity. “They are not mere decorative objects, they are subjects, with a head, heart, and soul, they deserve our care and respect,” he affirmed.
Furthermore, the organization also recalled how he highlighted the relationship between animal abuse and social violence.
At one point, the pontiff stated: “Any mistreatment of any creature is contrary to human dignity“. He also encouraged considering animals as “neighbors”.

The climate fight
In a global context marked by the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, Pope Francis’s message gains renewed relevance.
“His call to care for ‘our common home’ included an invitation to reflect on the impact of the food system, the use of natural resources, and the need to protect the most vulnerable, both human and non-human animals alike,” added Veg Foundation in their message.
“Faced with the climate urgency, Pope Francis’s message gains strength: it is urgent to review our relationship with animals, nature, and the environment we share,” said Jesica Bon Denis, communications director.
“Caring for the Earth and the animals living in it is not only an ethical act but a common responsibility,” she added.
In that sense, they considered that Pope Francis’s memory leaves a legacy of “compassion, dialogue, and respect towards all forms of life”. His legacy invites us to build a fairer and more empathetic world, where caring for the Earth and its inhabitants is a fundamental principle.
