Prefecture confiscated five illegal fishing nets in the Uruguay River in Corrientes: why they are prohibited

The Argentine Naval Prefecture carried out operations on the Uruguay River, near Yapeyú, Corrientes, and managed to confiscate five illegal fishing nets.

These elements, known as “mallones,” totaled 200 meters and were spread out on the riverbed, a key area for the conservation of fish fauna.

Fortunately, at the time of the seizure, none of the nets had trapped fish. Acts were drawn up for the violation of the Fishing Law, and the total value of the confiscated items was estimated at $500,000.

The operation, which involved the intervention of the Directorate of Natural Resources of the Province of Corrientes, extended for several kilometers along the river. This action reaffirmed the authorities’ commitment to the protection of natural resources and the fight against illegal fishing.

It is important to highlight that in Argentina, permitted fishing activities vary greatly depending on the modality (sport or commercial), jurisdiction (inland or maritime waters), and the type of species being sought.

The key is that the use of any net is strictly regulated to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources and ecosystem protection.

### The case in La Cruz, also on the Uruguay River

It is worth mentioning that this case is not the only one detected in Corrientes so far this year regarding illegal fishing equipment.

Less than two months ago, also during a control and surveillance in river waters, the Prefecture based in La Cruz confiscated prohibited fishing equipment valued at $644,400.

It was at kilometer 660.6 on the right bank of the Uruguay River. The operation took place recently when the personnel on board detected three fishing nets totaling 120 meters in length. In addition, there were seven longlines reaching 210 meters with 49 hooks.

It is worth noting that no captured specimens were found in the removed items. All the material was transported to the local Prefecture base and made available to the Directorate of Natural Resources of the Province of Corrientes.

This intervention is carried out within the framework of current regulations on fishing and aquatic fauna conservation.

During the first days of July, a broad interinstitutional river and land patrol operation was carried out in strategic sectors of the Uruguay River.
