Students from UNSa survey the Xibi Xibi river basin near the municipality of San Salvador de Jujuy.

The Secretariat of Planning and Environmental Management of the capital city of Jujuy, under the leadership of Adriana Díaz, recently welcomed a group of teachers, graduates, and thesis students from the National University of Salta (UNSa), belonging to the Engineering in Natural Resources and Environment program, who are conducting a technical research project in the Xibi Xibi River basin, located in San Salvador de Jujuy.

Guided by municipal technical staff, the academic delegation carried out a sampling of environmental variables in the Juan Galán area, located 12 km west of the city.

This action is part of the hydrological assessment tasks and ecosystem monitoring being carried out since 2021 in the region, supported by a network of meteorological stations and a local early warning system.

According to Secretary Díaz, San Salvador de Jujuy is the only municipality in the country with its own platform for early detection of climate events, which allows for real-time data collection on precipitation, humidity, and temperature, key aspects for predicting extreme hydrological events and planning environmental mitigation actions.

Applied science to the territory and strategic link with the academic field

During the visit, technician José Valverde presented the operation of the Municipal Meteorological Network and the Early Warning Service, installed along the course of the river.

Students were able to directly observe how these devices contribute to the analysis of the current state of the urban ecosystem.

In this context, the Chair of Watershed Management at the UNSa delivered to Díaz the thesis entitled “Evaluation of the State and conservation of riparian areas in the Xibi Xibi River basin (Jujuy), through the application of eco-hydrological indices for an ecological restoration proposal”. This document will be incorporated into the technical collection of the Secretariat as academic and strategic planning input.

The official highlighted that the system implemented in the Xibi Xibi River not only represents a valuable scientific tool, but also serves as a basis for students’ final projects, strengthening the relationship between the municipal government and the academic field.

Finally, institutional spokespeople emphasized that this collaboration aims to promote public policies for environmental protection, encourage research applied to the territory, and promote sustainable management of local natural resources.
