The province of Entre Ríos expands its System of Protected Natural Areas with two new reserves.

The Senate of Entre Ríos unanimously approved the incorporation of two new protected natural areas: the Río de los Pájaros Natural Reserve in Colón, and El Potrero Botanical Garden, in Victoria.

This measure strengthens the Provincial System of Protected Natural Areas, a model that integrates public, private, and mixed spaces of high ecological, environmental, and cultural value.

New protected natural areas

The Ministry of Economic Development highlighted the importance of this expansion as part of a sustained territorial planning, balancing biodiversity conservation with local development.

“These spaces add to the natural and cultural heritage of Entre Ríos, consolidating a comprehensive vision that articulates environmental, productive, touristic, and social aspects”, stated Pablo Aceñolaza, director of Protected Natural Areas in a press release.

El Potrero Botanical Garden: history and biodiversity in Victoria

Located in Victoria, El Potrero hosts the only private botanical garden in the country, designed by the prestigious French landscaper Charles Thays.

Its historical value is reflected in the 1850 main house, which belonged to Joaquín Vivanco, personal physician to President Justo José de Urquiza.

  • Seven hectares of park and forest with over 300 labeled plant species.
  • Educational and recreational activities, promoting the knowledge of native flora.
  • Exclusive museum and gastronomic store, making it a reference for cultural and environmental tourism.

Río de los Pájaros Natural Reserve: an environmental refuge in Colón

Located in Colón, at the mouth of the Artalaz stream and the Uruguay River, the Río de los Pájaros Natural Reserve is inserted in an urban area with high tourism dynamism.

  • Transformation of a former industrial space into a conservation and recreation area.
  • Grasslands and gallery forests, home to native species.
  • Key role in absorbing thermal waters, reducing the impact on the river ecosystem.
  • Accessible space for recreation, sports, and environmental education.

A firm step towards a sustainable future

This expansion of the Provincial System of Protected Natural Areas reinforces Entre Ríos’ commitment to conservation and balanced development.

The integration of these natural reserves represents progress in environmental management, with ecological, educational, and touristic benefits.
