They form the Delta del Río Santiago Private Natural Reserve: over 100 hectares of voluntary conservation in Berisso and Ensenada

On June 26, 2026, the Private Natural Reserve Delta of the Santiago River was formally established in the province of Buenos Aires.

The initiative was driven by the Association of Riverbank Producers and Owners (A.P.P.R.), which promotes a voluntary conservation model to protect the natural heritage, landscape, historical, and cultural aspects of the Delta, in harmony with traditional uses and sustainable development.

The establishment was carried out through the signing of the Foundational and Adhesion Act in an expanded meeting of members and owners.

Main Objectives

  • Protection of wetlands and riverbank forests.
  • Conservation of watercourses and biodiversity.
  • Defense of the Delta’s historical and cultural heritage.
  • Prevention against threats: unplanned urbanizations, illegal occupations, fires, and security issues.

Importance of the Private Reserves Model

The Private Natural Reserves are internationally recognized as conservation tools. They allow owners to voluntarily commit to preserving the natural values of their lands. In Argentina, this model is growing steadily and is aligned with current legislation.

The A.P.P.R. plans to incorporate the Delta of the Santiago River Reserve into the Argentine Network of Private Natural Reserves, which will strengthen cooperation, exchange of experiences, and technical assistance with other initiatives.

First Stage

  • More than 100 hectares voluntarily incorporated.
  • Opening to new owners from Berisso and Ensenada who share the objectives.
  • Development of a Management Plan.
  • Environmental inventories and agreements with universities and scientific organizations.
  • Obtaining institutional and legal recognitions.

Testimonials

Jorge Barrionuevo, secretary of the A.P.P.R., expressed:

“For many years, the Delta of the Santiago River has been the scene of countless efforts to defend its identity and natural heritage. This Reserve represents the continuation of that path.”

He also emphasized that the real work begins now: demonstrating that it is possible to conserve the Delta with the commitment of its own owners, combining environmental protection, responsible production, and regional development.

Benefits of Natural Reserves

Reserves fulfill vital environmental functions:

  • Protection of water and soil: they act as sponges that absorb and filter rainwater.
  • Defense against climate: they reduce urban temperatures and prevent floods.
  • Wildlife refuge: they host unique species, such as the dune lizard in the Faro Querandí Reserve.
  • Education and health: they bring nature closer to the community and improve air quality.
  • Historical reserve: they protect archaeological and paleontological sites.

The province of Buenos Aires has nearly 80 protected areas, including the Pereyra Iraola Park (over 10,000 hectares) and the Pilar Natural Reserve.

The creation of the Private Natural Reserve Delta of the Santiago River marks a milestone for Berisso and Ensenada. It represents the owners’ commitment to protecting one of the most important wetland systems in the province and demonstrates that consensus, voluntary participation, and joint work are concrete tools to build a sustainable future.
