Trial for environmental damage in Puerto Madryn: Prosecution requested effective imprisonment for accused fishery executives

The Prosecutor’s Office requested sentences of **effective imprisonment** for the accused in the [trial for environmental damage in Puerto Madryn](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/comenzo-el-juicio-por-dano-ambiental-en-puerto-madryn-contra-directivos-de-una-pesquera-de-que-se-los-acusa/). These are two people responsible for **Conarpesa**, accused of discharging **untreated fish waste into the Golfo Nuevo in 2023**.

During the arguments hearing held this Monday in the city, the Public Prosecutor’s Office asked for **Nadine Parry**, the company’s environmental manager, to be sentenced to **3 years and 6 months of effective imprisonment**. As for **Yosef Vargas**, who was in charge of the effluent plant, to **3 years and 3 months**.

The prosecutors **Alex Williams** and **Florencia Bianchi** argued that **both executives are responsible for the discharge of raw liquids** from shrimp processing. These were poured **directly into the sea without prior treatment**.

## Started the trial for environmental damage in Madryn: the Prosecutor’s request

The accusation is supported by a **set of evidence**. Among them, expert reports from **CENPAT-[CONICET](https://www.conicet.gov.ar/)**, laboratory analyses, official records, ocular inspections, and photographic records.

All confirmed that there was a system of **clandestine pipelines** type **by-pass** that allowed diverting the [**effluents without treatment**](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/saneamiento-del-riachuelo-a-30-anos-de-la-primera-promesa-que-lo-contamina-en-un-80-y-los-desafios-de-ahora-en-adelante/) towards Golfo Nuevo.

The technical reports showed parameters well above the permitted limits: **suspended solids up to 21 times higher than the limit**, biochemical oxygen demand (**BOD**) 60 times higher, ammonia 25 times higher, and **Escherichia coli** 2700 times above the maximum allowed.

Also included as evidence were WhatsApp messages between the accused, in which they **acknowledged the existence of irregular derivations**. This, for the Prosecutor’s Office, confirms the knowledge and joint decision on the maneuver.

With the arguments already presented, it will be Judge **Patricia Reyes** who will define the sentence in the coming days.

## Case details

On Monday, the [trial for environmental damage](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/historica-sentencia-condenan-por-quema-de-humedales-a-tres-responsables-del-incendio-en-el-delta-entrerriano/) against two hierarchical officials of the company **Conarpesa** began. The investigation started in 2020, and they were charged.

According to the **Public Prosecutor’s Office**, the accused individuals are **Nadine Parry**, plant manager, and **Brahim Yoosef Vargas**, responsible for effluent treatment.

The hearings are chaired by Judge Reyes, with the participation of Chief Prosecutor Williams and Prosecutor Bianchi, from the Special Agency for [Environmental Crimes](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/empezo-el-juicio-por-la-masacre-de-pinguinos-en-punta-tombo-el-acusado-ofrecio-tierras-y-lo-rechazaron/).

The investigation began in **2020**, when a video showing a **pink liquid with a strong odor** being **dumped directly into the sea** from the **Parque Industrial Pesquero** went viral.

Based on this material, the chief prosecutor ordered an official investigation that included **technical expertise**, inspections, and **laboratory analysis**.

Forensic personnel, municipal **Environmental** experts, and scientists from **CENPAT-CONICET** confirmed the existence of an **unauthorized bypass** at the company’s plant. Through there, liquids would have been derived without proper treatment.

Studies detected **pollution levels well above the permitted limits**, with the presence of **Escherichia coli** in quantities up to **2000 times above the legal limit**.

The discharge occurred directly into **Golfo Nuevo**, an area of high environmental and touristic value, which also houses protected marine species and is part of the coastal ecosystem surrounding the city of Puerto Madryn.
