Winter arrived early in Santa Cruz, covering the access to Los Glaciares National Park with snow

The first signs of winter are already impacting southern Argentina. In the Los Glaciares National Park, authorities reported an adverse climatic scenario affecting the circulation towards one of its main attractions.

In this context, the Río Mitre–Glaciar Moreno corridor presents snow accumulation, low temperatures, and strong winds. Therefore, it is recommended to take extreme precautions when traveling through the area.

Additionally, these conditions are part of a progressive seasonal change. Thus, the climatic instability begins to mark the start of the cold season in the Patagonian region.

Adverse conditions: accumulated snow and risk at the access to the region’s most visited glacier

During the day of April 24, a layer of snow was detected on various sections of the road. In particular, kilometers 24 and 25 present greater difficulties for circulation.

However, the problem is not limited to the snow. There are also wind gusts and a probability of precipitation, which increases the risk for vehicles.

Consequently, authorities recommend driving at low speed. Likewise, it is essential to follow the instructions of the park staff.

A key corridor: tourist traffic and precautions on one of the most visited routes

The affected access leads to the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the country’s most popular destinations. Therefore, the visitor flow is usually high throughout the year.

However, the current conditions require modifying the usual dynamics. In this way, safety is prioritized over constant circulation.

Additionally, the influx of cold air anticipates the persistence of this scenario. Consequently, the restrictions could remain in the coming days.

Seasonal changes: the advance of cold as an indicator of winter in Patagonia

The temperature drop observed corresponds to typical late autumn patterns. In this sense, the region begins to transition towards winter conditions.

On the other hand, the presence of snow on roads and low areas indicates an advance of the cold. This impacts both mobility and tourist activities.

Moreover, these phenomena are part of the natural dynamics of the Patagonian ecosystems. However, their intensity can vary depending on global climatic factors.

Snow season: when it begins and how it influences tourism and mountain ecosystems

In southern Patagonia, the snow season usually starts between May and June. However, early events can be recorded from late April, as is currently happening.

This period extends until September, with variations depending on the altitude and climatic conditions of each year. Consequently, the first snowfalls mark the start of a key cycle.

Additionally, snow plays a fundamental role in ecosystems. It acts as a water reserve, regulates temperatures, and supports mountain biodiversity.

In summary, the conditions recorded in the Los Glaciares National Park reflect the advance of the cold season. Although they represent a challenge for circulation, they also demonstrate the natural dynamics of one of Patagonia’s most emblematic environments.
