In front of the Matanza Riachuelo River, in the town of Piñeiro, Avellaneda district, an initiative is advancing that seeks to transform a degraded space into a center of reference for environmental research and education. The project includes the construction of a Research Center aimed at strengthening the monitoring and sanitation actions of the basin.
The proposal arises in a sector deeply affected by decades of industrial activity. Over time, the contamination processes and subsequent deindustrialization left large vacant lands and urban sectors with little integration into the natural environment.
In this scenario, the new building aims to become a tool for environmental recovery and the reconnection of the community with one of the most emblematic watercourses in the country.

A design intended to coexist with the landscape
The implementation of the project responds to the particular characteristics of the land and the riverfront. Therefore, the construction approaches the river to take advantage of the natural views and reinforce the connection with the landscape.
At the same time, the design frees up a significant area for public use. This decision allows for the expansion of the available green spaces for residents and preserves the existing vegetation in the area.
Additionally, a circulation corridor connects the building with the neighborhood, the adjacent factory, and the riverbank. In this way, the aim is to improve accessibility and strengthen integration between the different sectors coexisting in the area.
Research, education, and citizen participation
The complex was conceived from two differentiated volumes that organize activities according to their functional needs. On the lower floor are the spaces open to the community.
There will be an environmental school aimed at promoting ecological education, community participation, and the dissemination of knowledge related to the care of the basin.
Above this level, the research areas will be developed, where specialists can work on studies related to environmental quality, aquatic ecosystems, and territorial recovery strategies.

What are the environmental and social benefits of the initiative?
The creation of this center can provide multiple benefits for the region. First, it will strengthen the generation of scientific information necessary to guide sanitation policies and environmental conservation.
Likewise, it will bring knowledge closer to the public through educational programs and awareness activities that foster a more responsible relationship with natural resources.
On the other hand, the recovery of degraded lands and the incorporation of new public spaces contribute to improving urban quality of life, increasing the presence of green areas, and promoting a greater appreciation of the environmental heritage of the basin.
Sustainable architecture to accompany the restoration of the territory
From a construction standpoint, the project combines solidity and efficiency. The concrete base takes advantage of the natural slope of the land to generate spacious and functional areas without significantly modifying the original topography.
Meanwhile, the upper volume incorporates a mixed steel structure and prefabricated elements, accompanied by glazed enclosures and a lightweight metallic envelope that favors natural lighting and visual connection with the surroundings.
Thus, the architectural proposal seeks to accompany the ecological restoration processes of the Matanza Riachuelo River, transforming an area historically impacted by human activity into a space oriented towards knowledge, conservation, and community gathering.
