Austria installs first hydrogen-powered railway line: a milestone in the transition to zero-emission infrastructure

The Austrian company **Voestalpine** has achieved a historic breakthrough by producing and installing the **first railway track made with hydrogen**, without [carbon dioxide emissions](https://noticiasambientales.com/innovacion/algas-marinas-contra-el-metano-una-estrategia-emergente-para-reducir-emisiones-del-ganado/).

This development is part of a **pilot project** at the **Donawitz** plant. A mixture of **scrap and pure iron** reduced through the **HYFOR (Hydrogen-based Fine Ore Reduction)** process was used, which employs **renewable hydrogen** as a reducing agent.

From research to the track: green steel with railway quality

**The rail was melted, rolled, and installed at the Linz central station as part of a strategic expansion.**

The reduced iron was melted at the **TechMet** research facility. It was then transformed into a rail at the **adjacent rolling mill**, maintaining the required **hardness and strength standards** for railway applications.

The final product was installed at the **Linz central station** as part of the expansion to **four tracks on the West line between Vienna and Wels**. It marks a **tangible transition towards [sustainable infrastructures](https://noticiasambientales.com/innovacion/nueva-espuma-multifuncional-revoluciona-la-eficiencia-energetica-en-la-construccion-sostenible/)**.

Clean technology: hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels

The HYFOR process generates water vapor as the only residue, with no CO2 emissions.

The technology used replaces the use of **coal and coke** in steel production with **green hydrogen**, making the process the **cleanest available alternative in today’s steel industry**.

This rail represents an **industrial validation** that **hydrogen-based steel** can meet technical requirements without compromising **safety or durability**.

Greentec steel: Voestalpine’s decarbonization plan

The company projects net-zero emissions by 2050 and electric furnaces powered by renewable energy from 2027.

This development is part of the **greentec steel** program, through which Voestalpine aims to achieve **net-zero CO₂ emissions** at its plants by **2050**. As an intermediate step, the installation of **electric arc furnaces** in **Linz and Donawitz** is planned from **2027**, powered exclusively by **green energy**.

The project is supported by the mining group **Rio Tinto**, which will supply **70% of the iron ore** for a future emission-free steel plant, also planned for mid-2027.

Efficient logistics and alignment with clean mobility

The rail is manufactured and delivered within hours, integrating sustainability into the operational rhythm of the **railway sector**.

Local manufacturing in Donawitz and quick delivery to Linz exemplify **efficient logistics**, reinforcing the message that **sustainable innovation** can seamlessly integrate into the **railway sector** without friction.

This advancement brings **technical and environmental coherence** to **clean mobility and green energy** policies.
