A biotechnological innovation promises to revolutionize the fate of the most polluting waste in our daily lives: disposable diapers. The company Hiro Technologies has developed a model capable of decomposing in weeks thanks to the power of fungi. This alternative not only reduces environmental impact but also turns trash into fertile soil.

The technology, called MycoDigestible Diapers, uses a special formula of fungi that is activated by the moisture of the used diaper. Unlike traditional models, which can take centuries to degrade, these diapers disappear in common landfills without the need for composting plants.

The key lies in a mix of fungal spores, included in an envelope inside the diaper, which upon contact with the waste start to digest the synthetic polymers. Thus, instead of microplastics, the final result is mycelium and nutrient-rich soil.

A natural solution to landfill collapse

Every year, billions of diapers end up in landfills, taking up space and releasing pollutants. Faced with this scenario, the proposal by Hiro Technologies represents a concrete step towards a more sustainable waste management.

The system works even in adverse conditions: it does not require oxygen or high humidity. This allows for its immediate implementation anywhere in the world, without waiting for new treatment infrastructures. It is an accessible solution designed to scale up.

Moreover, the generated mycelium can enrich the soil and promote regenerative crops. This transformation from waste to resource redefines the concept of “disposable product” and opens the door to a new generation of biodegradable materials.

From diaper changes to a paradigm shift

Hiro’s proposal is not limited to childcare. The technology is already being adapted for adult diapers and feminine hygiene products, sectors with a significant environmental impact. The goal: to replace persistent plastic with useful microbial life.

The project has been recognized with international awards and is moving towards agreements with manufacturers and waste operators. The mission is clear: to reduce millions of tons of plastic waste and reintegrate them into the natural cycle.

In times where the planet calls for concrete actions, this initiative demonstrates that it is possible to care for the little ones without leaving a toxic footprint. Nature, once again, provides the answers that the industry needs.

Eco-friendly diapers: a sustainable and healthy alternative

Eco-friendly diapers are an option designed to reduce the environmental impact generated by conventional disposable products. There are two main types: reusable diapers, usually made of absorbent fabrics and natural materials like organic cotton or bamboo, and biodegradable disposable diapers, which use compostable plant fibers and plastics that degrade much faster under proper conditions.

Unlike traditional diapers, which can take over 500 years to decompose and generate enormous amounts of waste, eco-friendly diapers minimize the environmental footprint. Reusable diapers allow for multiple washes without losing effectiveness, and biodegradable ones, although single-use, are designed to disintegrate in weeks or a few months, instead of centuries.

In addition to the environmental benefit, eco-friendly diapers are often free of perfumes, chlorine, and synthetic gels, reducing the risk of irritations, allergies, and dermatitis on the baby’s skin. This combination of environmental care and child health makes them an increasingly valued choice for families seeking responsible and sustainable alternatives in daily care.
