Samantha Álvarez, Secretary of Environment and Climate Change, announced that the Solidaridad city council will implement an innovative approach regarding sargassum and reefs by 2025 in the Riviera Maya.
Thanks to a collaboration with THRASOS3D, the company awarded the Best Initiative for Sustainable Technological Innovation, the collected sargassum will be turned into artificial reefs.
3D Printing for Coral Ecosystem Regeneration
Through 3D printing, the collected sargassum will be transformed into artificial reefs, aiding in the regeneration of coral ecosystems.
For this process to be successful, the sargassum must be in optimal conditions during the collection and transformation. Álvarez explained that this new application adds to the traditional uses of sargassum, such as composting.

An Increase in Sargassum is Expected in 2025
As reported by Environmental News, a higher influx of sargassum is forecasted for 2025, as satellite monitoring predicts a greater increase than in 2024. Therefore, Playa del Carmen is preparing with machinery, containers, and the industrial sector.
Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal, Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone of Solidaridad, mentioned that there are plans to include the installation of machinery at strategic points on the beaches, as well as containers to expedite the collection and disposal of the seaweed.
