Solar Squared: the glass brick created in the United Kingdom that promises to transform energy-efficient architecture

In 2017, a team of researchers from the University of Exeter (United Kingdom) presented a development that captured the world’s attention: solar glass bricks capable of generating solar electricity, known as Solar Squared.

This technology, still in the validation phase, proposes a revolution in sustainable architecture, allowing building facades and walls to become active sources of clean energy.

Translucent design, thermal efficiency, and architectural versatility

An aesthetic and functional solution to the limitations of conventional solar panels.

Unlike traditional photovoltaic panels that require installation on roofs or rooftops, Solar Squared resembles translucent glass bricks used in various constructions.

Its design allows the passage of natural light, making it compatible with windows, walls, and decorative elements. It also incorporates advanced thermal insulation, improving the overall energy performance of the building.

Intelligent optics and integrated solar generation

Solar Squared bricks contain intelligent optics that focus solar light on small integrated photovoltaic cells.

This technology allows the generated electricity to be used directly in the building or stored for later use, opening up new possibilities for urban energy self-sufficiency.

From research to entrepreneurship: Build Solar Ltd

After years of research, the team founded Build Solar Ltd, led by solar scientist Dr. Hasan Baig and renewable energy expert Prof. Tapas K. Mallick.

In 2023, the company received a grant of £271,933 from the Energy Entrepreneurs Fund, allowing them to advance in the development and validation of solar bricks.

Potential promise: A revolution yet to be realized?

The technology has not yet been implemented on a large scale, but it lays the foundation for the future.

Although Solar Squared bricks have not reached commercial-scale production, their concept represents a potential solution to overcome the limitations of conventional solar panels.

In a context where energy-efficient architecture is gaining prominence, this innovation could allow electricity generation from any building surface, without compromising design or functionality.

Solar energy and urban planning: towards total integration

The photovoltaic evolution demands solutions that adapt to the aesthetics and structure of cities.

The use of renewable energies is key to addressing climate change, and more and more buildings are incorporating solar panels. However, their installation is often limited to elevated spaces, wasting much of the constructive potential.

Solar Squared proposes integrated solar architecture, where each brick is part of the energy solution.
