Waymo launches the robotaxi, an autonomous vehicle known as Ojai in the U.S.

Waymo, the innovative autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet, is making significant strides in the electric robotaxi sector. Its new model, known as Ojai, is revolutionizing driverless mobility in the United States thanks to its fully autonomous design.

Waymo accelerates robotaxi expansion with Ojai

Implemented in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, this robotaxi is launching at a crucial time for the industry, aiming to achieve one million autonomous rides per week before the end of the year. Competition from giants like Tesla and Zoox, part of Amazon, does not deter Waymo in its goal of leadership.

The Ojai, developed in collaboration with Geely, introduces a new paradigm by moving away from the scheme of modifying commercial cars. It dispenses with mechanical controls, significantly reducing manufacturing costs and maximizing interior space.

Equipped with an enhanced artificial intelligence system, the Ojai ensures safety in adverse weather conditions. With fewer optical components, it continues to ensure maximum road safety while keeping the investment per vehicle low.

The design of the Ojai breaks with previous models, such as those based on Jaguar or Chrysler, being the first Waymo robotaxi conceived from scratch to operate without a driver, thus optimizing its efficiency and costs.

The infrastructure of the Ojai features a spacious interior, automatic doors, and a flat floor for easy access. These features, along with its sixth-generation Waymo Driver system, allow for precise navigation in difficult weather conditions.

Additionally, it uses a Zeekr platform from the Geely group, while the driving systems and software are integrated in Arizona, balancing Asian manufacturing with American technology.

Waymo’s commitment to accessibility is reflected in improvements such as support bars and compatibility with assistance technologies, although access for wheelchair users is still in development.

With over 20 million autonomous journeys already completed, Waymo operates nearly 4,000 robotaxis, with significant expansion plans for the coming years, projecting thousands of additional units by 2026.

In a context of growing trade tensions, Waymo merges industrial efficiency and technological innovation, positioning itself at the forefront of autonomous transport in major cities of the United States.
