About 25 young people from the city of Mendoza created a robot designed to clean the sea.

This is Reefscape, a device that should be able to collect and plant algae on a reef.

With this innovation they will represent Argentina in the FIRST Robotics Competition, one of the most recognized robotics championships on the planet.

Mendoza teenagers created a robot to clean the sea

The team, called Andes Robotics, consists of a student from elementary school, high school students, and mentors from the University of Cuyo and the Technological University Institute. In other words, they are between 12 and 18 years old.

In just a month and a half, they were able to build this robot that would clean the oceans: simulating the removal of algae and planting corals.

The goal of the robotics competition is to use engineering skills to strengthen one of the most diverse habitats in the ocean.

“There is the communication area, which is in charge of communication with sponsors, with other teams from other countries; the programming area, which is in charge of the robot’s program,” enumerated to the newspaper Los Andes Guadalupe Burgos, one of the members, 15 years old, about the team’s composition.

“The mechanical area, which is in charge of all the robot system and the design area, which is in charge of using CAD design applications and doing all the general design part,” she added to the same local media.

Ocean protection
Among the goals was to strengthen one of the most diverse habitats in the ocean.

Argentina represented by young people

The team is already in São Paulo, Brazil, to present the robot. If they win, they could secure a spot to participate in the VEX Robotics World Championship 2025 in May, in Texas, United States.

The 25 participating students were selected from 180 candidates after going through evaluations.

The mentors, on the other hand, are between 20 and 29 years old, advanced students of Engineering careers at UNCuyo and made it here also after a thorough evaluation.

First Global, the organizer, is a non-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen, an American entrepreneur and inventor, with the aim of promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) worldwide.

The complete team:

Marco Ruso, Lorenzo Traverzaro, Juan Pablo Pelegrina, Guadalupe Murgo, Jeremías Romere, Matías Rasmussen, Julián Bresso, Alejo Mariño, Máximo Cantú, Francisco Guerra, Santiago Caamaño, Tomás Aberastain, Evangelina Centre, Felipe Cicchinelli, Ramiro Solá, Joaquín Figueroa, Alejandro Castro, Nicolás Videla, Luca Quevedo, Evangelina Centre, Yamil Hadid, Gabriel Viotti, Lucas Rodríguez Trad, Santiago Burini, and Danilo Michel, and their mentors are Ramiro Bianchini, Melanie Martínez, Valentín Panonto, Emiliano Mirábile, Iganacio Aguilera, mentors of ITU Diego Avila, Isaac Da Rosa, Bruno Redolfi, and Macarena Suárez.

Collaboration

As reported by local media, while they received help from EntradaWeb and Somos Corpora, the team from Mendoza is seeking collaboration for some tasks.

In addition to financial support to cover travel, accommodation, and meals, they require materials for the construction of the robot such as hardened aluminum, bearings, motors, MDF, acrylics, cables, rubbers, bolts, and polycarbonates.
