The Earth accelerates its rotation
The data was collected by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, using precise atomic clocks. This phenomenon provokes interest in the scientific community, as it challenges the notion that gravitational interaction with the Moon and tides gradually slow down the Earth’s spin.
A key factor in this variation is the Chandler wobble, a deviation in the planet’s axis of rotation, which, along with the accelerated melting of the poles, alters the distribution of masses on Earth.
This rearrangement is comparable to the effect of a skater accelerating their spin by bringing their arms closer to the body, altering the moment of inertia.
Additionally, movements in the Earth’s molten iron inner core contribute to these irregularities. Although the temporal impact is in milliseconds, the implications are significant for sectors that depend on Coordinated Universal Time, such as satellite navigation and telecommunications.
If this trend persists, the implementation of a negative leap second might be considered to adjust clocks to the new astronomical conditions.
