Raquel Chan defends genetically modified foods as a solution to climate change and highlights their safety

The Superiority of Genetically Modified Foods

In a recent interview on Modo Fontevecchia, Chan debunks the myth of “natural” in food. She explains that genetic editing presents itself as a critical solution to the challenges of climate change. She highlights that these foods, subject to exhaustive controls, are safe and necessary.

Chan also offers a critique of the situation of scientific and technological development in Argentina, emphasizing the urgency of policies to curb brain drain and increase investment in basic research.

Raquel Chan, in addition to being a senior researcher at CONICET and director of the Litoral Agrobiotechnology Institute, has revolutionized global agriculture with her work on drought-resistant crops such as wheat and corn, improving their ability to adapt to adverse climatic conditions.

The scientist argues that genetically modified foods, due to the strict controls they must pass, are safer than many other food products. According to Chan, the negative perception is due to a lack of information and the politicization of the issue, especially in Europe where restrictions have been notable.

Gene editing could be the key to overcoming traditional agricultural techniques that do not adapt quickly enough to climate change, a reality that is already severely affecting European crops, as noted in a recent interview with a French agricultural journalist.

Chan comments that resistance to genetically modified crops may have political rather than scientific roots. Initially, the rejection of herbicides associated with the first GMOs created a negative perception that still persists.

Finally, Chan reflects on the need for public policies that allow for the development of scientific achievements like HB4 technology. The decrease in state support for basic research puts at risk advances that could benefit the country.
