Activate Your Garden: San Luis Promotes Food Sovereignty with Training and Seed Distribution

The Ministry of Productive Development launched the fourth edition of the program “Activate Your Garden” on Wednesday, April 1st, with simultaneous events in Villa Mercedes and San Luis capital.

The initiative, organized by the Family Production Directorate, aims to promote the creation of family and productive gardens through training and the distribution of seasonal autumn-winter seed kits.

Initial Schedule

  • Villa Mercedes: ExLanín, Wednesday, April 1st at 15:00.
  • San Luis capital: ExColonia Hogar, Wednesday, April 1st at 15:00.

During both events, attendees receive practical training on sowing and managing seasonal crops. Participation does not require prior registration: simply register on-site and complete the training to access the seed kit.

Contents of the Kits

The kits include varieties such as:

  • Swiss chard
  • Red onion
  • Spinach
  • Galician lettuce
  • Beetroot
  • Carrot
  • Peas
  • Broccoli
  • Spring onion
  • Broad beans

Institutional Coordination

The program is supported by INTA San Luis, which provides technical assistance through its Experimental Station in Villa Mercedes and five extension agencies in Unión, San Luis, Quines, and Concarán. According to director Hugo Bernasconi, this coordination allows reaching producers with seed distribution and technical support.

The director of Family Production, Diego Pierdominici, highlighted that the program includes both family and productive gardens, especially in horticultural areas with irrigation channels such as Quines-Candelaria, Nogolí, San Francisco, and Luján.

Benefits of Home Gardens

The distribution of seeds and training aims to promote food sovereignty and generate multiple benefits:

  • Healthy eating: access to fresh and pesticide-free vegetables.
  • Economic savings: reduction in expenses on vegetables and fruits.
  • Environmental sustainability: lower carbon footprint and promotion of composting.
  • Emotional well-being: cultivation acts as therapy, reducing stress and promoting an active lifestyle.
  • Education and community: strengthens values such as patience and responsibility in children, as well as promoting the exchange of knowledge and products.

Upcoming Activities

On Monday, April 6th, a press conference will be held to announce the complete schedule of training and distributions at various locations in the province.

“Activate Your Garden” establishes itself as a key program to promote sustainable production and responsible consumption in San Luis.

The combination of training, seed distribution, and technical support makes this initiative a concrete tool to improve the quality of life for families and strengthen the local economy.
