Ribera Norte Natural Park: a living wetland in the heart of the city that protects biodiversity and offers nature all year round

In Acassuso, just meters from the river, the Parque Natural Municipal Ribera Norte remains open all year round. Additionally, during the summer, it adjusts its hours to facilitate visits. Thus, locals and visitors have access to a rare landscape in urban areas.

The site features free trails for walking. Therefore, it allows visitors to learn about the flora and fauna of the river wetlands. It also offers rest areas to spend the day outdoors.

Its strategic location makes it an urban oasis. However, it maintains a low level of human intervention. In this way, it preserves active ecological processes in the middle of the city.

An ecosystem with history and diversity

The reserve was protected in 1982 and formally inaugurated in 1988. Since then, it has safeguarded about 50 hectares that include coast and river. Thus, it differs from other urban reserves created by artificial fills.

Inside, there are more than 350 plant species. Additionally, more than 200 bird species inhabit the area. There are also records of amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, which are key to the balance of the wetland.

The area has a nursery of native plants from the Río de la Plata. Therefore, it contributes to regional ecological restoration. At the same time, it attracts diverse fauna and promotes environmental education.

Ribera Norte allows for the observation of the real functioning of an ecosystem. Thus, relationships between flora and fauna and trophic networks can be appreciated. Additionally, it helps understand plant succession and animal adaptations.

This direct contact strengthens the bond between city and nature. Therefore, the reserve is used for educational and recreational purposes. Consequently, it promotes a more conscious view of the environment.

The park is open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, it closes during heavy rains or river floods. These measures prioritize safety and the conservation of the area.

A space full of flora, fauna, and environmental benefits

Having natural reserves in large cities improves environmental quality. Firstly, they regulate temperatures and reduce the heat island effect. Additionally, they act as sponges against floods.

These spaces conserve biodiversity in highly urbanized environments. Therefore, they function as ecological corridors for birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. They also improve air and water quality.

Urban reserves also strengthen environmental education. Thus, they raise awareness about the importance of wetlands. Ultimately, they are key allies for more resilient and sustainable cities.

How to get to Parque Natural Ribera Norte

By car, access is via Avenida del Libertador to Perú. Then, continue towards the coast via Sebastián Elcano and Almafuerte. Finally, enter through Camino de la Ribera.

By public transport, you can take the Tren de la Costa to Barrancas. Another option is the Retiro–Tigre line, getting off at Acassuso. Additionally, nearby buses like 168 and 437 are available.
