The Tuyú Marshes Nature Reserve: a little-known destination in Buenos Aires ideal for traveling in autumn

A few kilometers from San Clemente del Tuyú, on the Buenos Aires coast, lies the Reserva Natural Marismas del Tuyú, a protected area created in 2023 that still does not appear in most getaway guides.

With more than 350 hectares, it offers silence, biodiversity, and unique landscapes, making it a perfect option for those seeking tranquility and direct contact with nature.

Landscapes and Ecosystems

The environment combines marshes, grasslands, and native vegetation, resulting from the meeting of the fresh water of the Río de la Plata and the salty water of the Argentine Sea. This mix creates particular conditions that favor species adapted to different levels of salinity.

The reserve is part of the Bahía de Samborombón, recognized for its environmental value, and is integrated into the set of protected areas that includes the Parque Nacional Campos del Tuyú.

Low Impact Activities

The reserve is oriented towards recreational and educational low-impact activities:

  • Walks along marked trails to explore typical environments of the region.
  • Wildlife observation, with species such as the red knot, southern flamingos, and skimmers.
  • Watching marine turtles at risk of extinction, such as the green and loggerhead turtles, which use these coasts at certain times.
  • Natural viewpoints with open views towards the bay, ideal for photography and contemplation.

Educational Value

The reserve was conceived as a space to spread the importance of wetlands and their role in biodiversity.

During autumn, moderate temperatures and fewer tourists make walks easier and increase the chances of observing animals in their natural environment.

How to Get There

From the City of Buenos Aires, the drive takes about 3 and a half hours (350 km):

  • Take Route 2 towards the Atlantic coast.
  • At km 380, turn onto Provincial Route 11 towards San Clemente del Tuyú.
  • From there, the signage leads to the San Antonio Lighthouse, a reference point for entering the reserve.

There are also buses to San Clemente, although final access may require additional transportation.

Tips for the Visit

  • Wear comfortable clothing and light outerwear.
  • Use suitable footwear for trails.
  • Carry water and anticipate weather changes due to proximity to the sea.

The Reserva Natural Marismas del Tuyú is a recent and little-known destination that positions itself as an attractive alternative for those seeking a different and natural outing. With its biodiversity, coastal landscapes, and educational value, it offers a unique experience, especially in autumn when the environment can be enjoyed with greater calm and fullness.
