The cooperative Creando Conciencia, made up of former waste pickers from the Tigre district, has launched a new production line of Recycled High-Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), a material that combines strength, elasticity, and durability.
With this initiative, the organization is advancing the consolidation of a comprehensive recycling circuit: collecting, separating, transforming, and reintroducing products made from plastic waste back into the market. This transforms a discarded material into a quality input, while also generating decent employment for its members.
Recycled HIPS is known for its ability to absorb impacts and withstand intensive use, making it ideal for everyday surfaces and objects. The cooperative’s commitment goes beyond production to also promote environmental awareness in the community, reinforcing the need to separate waste at the source.
This new project adds to other lines of work already developed by Creando Conciencia at its Cooperative Production Hub, where they also manufacture school supplies, urban furniture, and compost bins. In this way, they reaffirm their dual commitment: reducing the environmental impact of plastics and strengthening the labor reintegration of those who have historically been excluded from the productive system.

The Environmental Benefits of Recycled Plastic
Recycling high-impact plastics like HIPS helps reduce pressure on landfills and open-air dumps. Each kilogram recovered represents less pollution in rivers, soils, and oceans, where plastics often break down into microplastics with serious consequences for wildlife and human health.
Furthermore, the recycling process requires considerably less energy than producing virgin plastic, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This means that using recycled materials not only combats pollution, but also helps mitigate climate change.
Another key benefit is the decrease in demand for oil, a non-renewable resource from which the raw material to produce plastics is obtained. By reintegrating existing waste into the economic cycle, the extraction of new amounts of hydrocarbons is avoided, thus protecting the associated ecosystems from exploitation.

A Cooperative with Social and Environmental Impact
Creando Conciencia was founded in 2006 in response to neighbors’ concerns about waste disposal and the precarious working conditions of waste pickers. Currently, it has more than 50 partners and collection contracts in various neighborhoods of Tigre and Benavídez, establishing itself as a leader in sustainable waste management.
In addition to their productive work, members serve as certified environmental promoters, educating the community on proper waste separation. The cooperative also participates in national networks and federations that promote the circular economy and social inclusion in the recycling sector.
The production of recycled high-impact plastics is not just a technological advancement, but a sign of how the social economy can be a driver of ecological change. Creando Conciencia demonstrates that environmental care and the creation of decent employment can go hand in hand, building a fairer and more sustainable future.
