Quilmes strengthens its environmental policy by focusing on urban recycling and efficient public management of solid waste

The municipality of Quilmes advanced in its environmental policy. In recent days, it approved the feasibility of the Waste Collection Program.

The initiative is part of the 2026 Climate Action Plan. Additionally, it aligns with the current provincial regulations.

This step consolidates a public management model sustained over time. Likewise, it incorporates urban recyclers as key actors.

From system crisis to state reconstruction

The waste management in the city went through critical moments. For years, the service had structural failures, negatively impacting the quality of life of the population.

However, the municipality promoted a progressive recovery. Since 2019, public investment was prioritized and the fleet of trucks was expanded and infrastructure was improved.

Currently, the collection reaches more than 700 thousand inhabitants. As a result, greater efficiency in the service was achieved.

Expansion of recycling and new urban devices

The system incorporated tools to promote recycling. Among them, the expansion of Ecopoints stands out.

These spaces increased from 7 to 15 in different neighborhoods. Additionally, 11 zones with differentiated collection were implemented, as well as progress in urban containerization.

The amount of waste collected increased significantly. It went from 513 to 640 tons daily. Therefore, the municipality optimized comprehensive management.

The Ecopark and the inclusion of urban recyclers

The creation of the Ecopark marked a turning point. This space allowed for improved waste treatment.

It also strengthened the local recycling circuit. In parallel, recycler workers were integrated who play an essential role in the circular economy.

The municipality promoted their labor formalization. This included equipment, rights, and recognition. In this way, progress was made in social and environmental inclusion.

The benefits of urban recycling in environmental management

Urban recycling reduces the volume of buried waste. This decreases the pressure on sanitary landfills and allows for the recovery of reusable materials.

These are reincorporated as raw material in the industry. On the other hand, final disposal costs are reduced, helping to generate significant savings for the State.

Likewise, pollutant emissions are reduced. Recycling avoids burning and accumulation of garbage, while promoting citizen participation.

Schools, clubs, and businesses integrate into the system. Consequently, collective environmental awareness is strengthened.

Towards a sustainable and inclusive management model

The advancement of these policies consolidates a structural change. The municipality bets on a modern management of waste.

Additionally, it promotes a long-term environmental vision. Recycling is positioned as the central axis of the system and is articulated with social inclusion and local development.

In this framework, the State plays a strategic role. It coordinates resources, actors, and public policies. Thus, Quilmes advances towards a more sustainable model with a focus that prioritizes the environment and quality of life.
