A large number of civil society organizations, medical institutions, and academic institutions have come together in defense of the current Front-of-Package Food Labeling Law. This happened in response to rumors of possible modifications or repeal by the Executive Branch.

Importance of the PAS Law

More than 700 individuals, including medical professionals, chefs, and nutritionists, have signed a declaration seeking to defend the validity of the Promotion of Healthy Eating Law (PAS Law).

In the declaration, NGOs highlighted that the PAS Law represents a significant advance for the public health of Argentina for several reasons:

  • Promotes the population’s freedom by providing clear information on critical nutrients.
  • Addresses poor nutrition and the high consumption of ultra-processed products, especially among children and adolescents.
  • Result of a plural and democratic debate, widely supported by Congress.
  • Supported by research from UNICEF and FIC Argentina, showing a significant decrease in the perception of products with health seals and in purchase intention.

Positive Impact of the Food Labeling Law

According to an opinion study by the Ministry of Health in 2023, 43% of the population considers labels when making a purchase, and 58% changed their purchase intention for cookies and 57% for beverages.

Expert Statements

Ana Cáceres, president of the Argentine Federation of Nutrition Graduates (FAGRAN), emphasized the importance of the Labeling Law as a tool to promote healthier eating habits and combat diseases related to poor nutrition. She also highlighted the federal and committed work of nutritionists throughout the country.

The Obesity and Diabetes Committee of the Argentine Federation of Cardiology strongly endorsed the law, recognizing its potential to reduce the burden of cardiometabolic diseases in the country and improve public health.

Need to Continue Implementation

In the face of attempts to weaken or repeal the law, it is necessary to continue with its implementation and strengthen its measures to ensure a better quality of life for future generations and reduce premature mortality in Argentina.
