Ultra-processed food and its impact on health

Most read

Currently, many people are unaware of the quality of the food they consume daily and the impact it can have on their health. Ultra-processed food, also known as “junk food” or fast food, has become a cornerstone of modern nutrition, but its high content of saturated fats, sugars, and additives poses serious health risks.

These products are characterized by being highly industrialized and containing ingredients such as refined flours, hydrogenated oils, excessive salt, colorants, and preservatives. Additionally, they are usually low in essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them unhealthy choices in the long term.

The excessive consumption of these foods is closely related to diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. Their high caloric content and the presence of additives that can lead to addiction contribute to weight gain and an unbalanced diet.

The deception of “healthy” labeling

In an attempt to appeal to consumers concerned about their well-being, many brands have started to market labeled products as “organic,” “bio,” or “natural.” However, this does not guarantee that they are healthy. Potato chips with high sodium levels, smoothies with fruit essences only, and baked goods with artificial thickeners are just some examples of how marketing can disguise ultra-processed foods as healthy.

To avoid falling into this deception, it is essential to read the nutritional labels and check the ingredients. A product with a long list of additives and preservatives is hardly a truly healthy option.

The importance of a balanced diet

While it is possible to indulge occasionally in fast food, ideally, it should not be the basis of daily nutrition. Preparing homemade meals with fresh and natural ingredients is the best way to ensure a balanced and beneficial diet for health.

Often, lack of time is used as an excuse to opt for quick and less nutritious choices. However, small changes in daily habits, such as reducing screen time and dedicating a few minutes to cooking, can make a significant difference in people’s physical and economic well-being.

Investing in a healthy diet is a decision that directly impacts quality of life and disease prevention. The key is to inform oneself, plan, and make conscious choices at every meal.

How bad is ultra-processed food?

Ultra-processed foods and beverages are products considered particularly obesogenic and generally unhealthy. In fact, experts mention that their frequent consumption leads to an increase in calories, which is linked to the development of type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

According to specialists, obesity is the main risk factor for diabetes and other chronic diseases, and obesity is largely influenced by having a poor diet, rich in fats, sugars, and sodium.

Therefore, it is important to make healthy choices; simple lifestyle-related measures have been shown to be effective in preventing diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
