Since the beginning of the year, the Municipality of the City of Mendoza has carried out cleaning operations in the Papagayos Canal. Thanks to this, they have already removed more than 500 tons of waste.
The objective is to keep this alluvial channel in impeccable conditions. It is a fundamental flood evacuation channel within the province’s system.

Through an important logistical deployment, in recent months, approximately 500 tons of waste have been removed, as officially reported.
To implement these operations, the municipality allocated trucks, machinery, and teams of workers on different occasions, carrying out an intensive work in the neighborhoods where the canal passes through.
Among them are Olivares, Flores, Santa Rita, San MartÃn, and Cano. Meanwhile, the Hydraulic Directorate of Mendoza provided various machinery to carry out the sanitation tasks of this channel.
The key role of the Papagayos Canal
According to the authorities, the correct conservation of the Papagayos Canal is vital to prevent floods and ensure the transport of water intended for flood evacuation and agricultural irrigation in the eastern part of Mendoza.
That is why the accumulation of waste, resulting from improper garbage disposal, compromises its operation. Thus, serious inconveniences arise during periods of heavy rains.
In this sense, the municipality also made a call to citizen awareness, urging residents and passersby not to litter in the canal and to make correct use of the waste collection system.
At this point, they detailed that, for the area from Boulogne Sur Mer westward in the City, it is organized as follows:
- Wet and leftovers: Monday, Thursday, and Saturday
- Wet and garden waste: Tuesday
- Dry recyclables: Friday
- No collection: Wednesday and Sunday
The service begins at 6 in the morning, ensuring proper waste treatment and promoting the revaluation of recyclable materials.
“The City continues to work steadily on the maintenance of the Papagayos Canal and reaffirms its commitment to the environment, urging citizens to join this effort to preserve a cleaner and safer environment,” they emphasized.
