Decarbonization of maritime transport: Argentina authorizes the use of biofuels in vessels.

The Government of Argentina has officially authorized the use of biofuels in maritime and river vessels, through Resolution 252/2025 of the Ministry of Economy.

This measure aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the naval sector, promoting the use of less polluting alternative fuels.

## Details of the regulation and requirements for operators
The resolution allows users to opt for biofuels in pure form or blended with fossil fuels, provided that the engines of their vessels are compatible with this technology.

Likewise, the category of Bunker Operator has been created within the Registry of Biofuel Operators and Blenders, establishing key requirements such as:
– Registration as a storage operator in the official registry.
– Certification of safety in storage facilities.
– Environmental and customs authorization.
– Technical resume of the plant manager.
– Documentation on operations and logistics.

In cases where operators do not have their own facilities, they must present agreements with companies authorized for storage, in addition to the corresponding security checks.

## Impact on port infrastructure and river logistics
Maritime and river transport represents a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

In Argentina, although biofuels are already used in the automotive sector, their application in vessels was minimal until this resolution.

With this new regulation, the Government aims to:
– Reduce pollution generated by maritime diesel, eliminating exceptions for its exclusive use in navigation.
– Improve energy efficiency and sustainability in national waterways.
– Optimize port supply, allowing better resource planning.

In addition, the use of biofuels in river and maritime routes could represent an opportunity to boost investments in infrastructure, focused on the production and distribution of renewable energies.

## Argentina aligns with global trends
This measure follows the line of international strategies promoted by organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which promotes the progressive reduction of fossil fuel use in commercial shipping.

Currently, various countries have implemented similar regulations, encouraging the use of clean fuels in the maritime sector.

The main advantages of this initiative include:
– Lower CO₂ and other pollutants emissions associated with maritime transport.
– Development of new propulsion technologies based on renewable fuels.
– Adaptation of the naval industry to global sustainability standards.

## A commitment to sustainability in navigation
With the implementation of this measure, Argentina positions itself as a key player in the transition towards a more sustainable maritime transport, reducing the environmental impact of the naval industry and promoting the development of alternative energies.

This resolution not only seeks to decarbonize port activities but also opens up possibilities for investment and technological development, generating a structural transformation in the river and maritime logistics of the country.
