Chile: The Epic Encounter with a Condor on the “Death Ridge” in the Andes Mountains.

The photographer @rafarojas3 captured an exceptional scene at the Filo de la Muerte, a challenging route in the Sierra de Ramón, near Santiago, Chile.

While traversing the trail, known for its rocky terrain and extreme exposure, he encountered a condor perched on the rocks, offering an imposing image of the king of the Andean skies.

“Crossing the Filo de la Muerte definitely requires concentration and effort, especially with soft snow and no marked path. But the trail had a surprise for us: a condor that allowed us to appreciate it in silence until the wind made it fly away,” he recounted on social media.

The Filo de la Muerte: an extreme route in the Sierra de Ramón

This technical pass connects Cerro Punta de Damas with Cerro San Ramón, and is known for its difficulty and danger.

The Sierra de Ramón is located in the Andean foothills, with a narrow and rocky terrain, steep slopes, and loose soil. It is a technical route that requires experience in climbing and descending.

Recommendations for mountaineers

  • Previous experience in high mountains and mastery of progression techniques.
  • Appropriate gear, including helmet, ropes, harness, and specialized footwear.
  • Weather information before departure, with maps or GPS.
  • Descent options: through the southern side (marked by a monolith), avoiding descending in the rocky northern area.

A natural challenge with an unforgettable spectacle

The Filo de la Muerte is a key point in the Integral Traverse of the Sierra de Ramón, offering a challenging experience and majestic views.

The sighting of a condor along the route is evidence of the balance between nature and adventure, leaving images that connect mountaineers with the wild essence of the Andes.
